You have to overpay for every UFA except for the rarest of circumstances (already being a contender).

For sure, but Markstrom reportedly would have stayed in Van for less if he got a NMC. Flames really need to build through the draft as Calgary isn't a destination for rich athletes.

No, we need to build through the draft because that's the way you become a contender. Then you might be able to add a Hossa or Chara or Niedermayer to put you over the top.
The biggest UFA acquisitions TBL made are: Matthew Carle and Filppula in '12 and '13.
STL biggest was Tyler friggin' Bozak.
WSH = Brooks Orpik
PIT = Gonchar and Paul Martin

He shouldn't make it back to Calgary with his job.

The man who built this garbage team should have NO part in its future.
He's a terrible GM who has accomplished NOTHING.

Was getting a coach who makes his player grind dump and chase a good fit for a team without enough of those forwards? Peters was an ####### but at least he chose a style of play that complimented these players. You’re not going to make Monahan into Kopitar or Gaudreau into Kane. And trying to make them that is predictably not working well. I see Trevelings days being numbered but Sutter using the players like this is not going to let the flames get any good trade value out of this.

Come on down Lombardi.. might as well get rid of this horrible GM and bring in a new GM. Gives him a headstart to figure out a plan.

I can’t see the owners tolerating this much longer when they are about to break ground on a new arena this year. Fan apathy is growing.

Sadly I think if Treliving was on the chopping block, he would have lost his job before the coach.

Yeah Tre already had numerous coaching changes. He should have made roster changes before bringing in a new coach.

I am not so sure. I think they brought in Sutter first to help find the next GM.

Maybe not immediately, but they added probably 200 million to the value of their asset on our backs.

There's really no compelling argument of why Treliving should keep the job and get a second crack at building a contending team. In seven years, he's amounted a cap team each season essentially that only got past the first round once; which was in the early years where it was moreso an inherited team and coach than one he made. He has several upcoming RFA's UFA's that are probably going to be too costly to all keep, and the team isn't even going to be a playoff contender, let alone cup contender.
That is Edmonton Oilers GM'ing bad.
