At this point just call up Phillips. Can't be worse than freaking Ritchie.

No, Matthew Phillips is not an answer to any of the Flames problems.

a) how do we know at this point?
b) one of our biggest issues is the lack of a skilled RW to play in the top 6... Phillips is a dominant RW at the AHL level.
There are plenty of reasons to give it a shot. Or we just continue to roll Simon, Leivo, Ryan, Bennett, and Ritchie all in that spot with the obvious great success it has had so far.

Call him up indeed, he’s tearing that league apart so let’s see where he sits in the pinnacle league. It can’t hurt especially if it means removing a Leivo or Ritchie for a game or two to see.
Gaudreau - Monahan - Bennett
Tkachuk - Lindholm - Phillips
Mangiapane - Backlund - Dube
Lucic - Ryan - Leivo/Ritchie

That is shuffling deck chairs but I guess anything is better than what the Flames put on the ice now, right?

Well that’s the thing Sutter wants to play this heavy forecheck style which doesn’t really play to Phillips strengths. I think Phillips would have thrived more under what Peters was doing but for Phillips to succeed with the Flames now Sutter needs to adjust his style some, because you’re not going to keep pressure on teams and keep the puck in their zone when half your forwards are undersized (Gaudreau, Ryan, Dube, Mangiapane and now Phillips) or don’t forecheck well (Monahan, Leivo).

Phillips is a skilled player scoring at nearly a 1.5 pts/GP pace in the AHL. He is a hell of a lot more than a "deck chair."
This would be an unequivocal upgrade.

1.15 ppg. 33rd in the AHL for PPG, while playing in a small division with a limited exposure to competition. Alex Petrovic is 1.09 ppg for comparison. Cooper Marody and Tyler Benson are 1.38 and 1.36 ppg respectively. Perspective.

He ranks 5th in the league in points per game for players playing at least 13 games or more. For a guy of his stature to be the heartbeat of his clubs offence in a league that is typically hard to score in that’s incredible. For me that’s tearing a league apart but I digress; maybe he’s not tearing the league apart in the truest form of that statement but he is performing at a very high level and we’ve seen players given looks for less honestly.

Why Phillips and not Ruzicka? Or Pospisil? Gawdin?
Or maybe, just maybe, I’ll defer to the coaching staff on both teams that know a hell of a lot more about icing a team rather than a bunch of wannabe fanbois.

Does that apply to the fans that wanted Ward gone too...?
Management eventually did it, and it looks like the right call. Maybe that will happen with this situation too!
I don't think hoping for a personnel change is that extreme though given the lack of success in that one specific position / and line.

The first fourteen players in that list have played less than 10 games.
Nineteen players ahead of Phillips have played no more than five games.
Perspective indeed. At least make an honest attempt to provide it.

Sure, the coaches have a better read on this than the fans. But there has been a lot of public attention afforded to the Flames minor league affiliate thanks to their temporary relocation to Calgary, and with all that added exposure those who are watching the games have noticed that Phillips is the driver of that top line. Almost everything runs through him.
That's why.

It's still in the AHL, where the play is much slower, sloppier with a lot more time and space than the NHL. It's a very different game the A.
There's a reason why there is the term "career AHLer"

Sounds like it's worth giving him a look though, no?
There's always the belief that a young player can earn a callup with their play. Rewarding those types of young players with an NHL callup is surely noticed.

Again, EVERYONE IS ABUNDANTLY AWARE OF THIS. But offensive success in the AHL—especially in an upward trajectory over consecutive years—is a decent predictor of NHL quality. Phillips is a highly skilled player who has crushed it at every level he has ever played. I just don't understand why some are so reluctant to even give him a shot.
