Honestly I think just about anyone on this board that keeps in tune with daily NHL musings could do Friedmans job. I cant stand the guy, totally overrated.

McDavid is the best player in the game by a wide margin. It’s not even close, hence, I can see the rational behind the talk. Friedman is a great contributor to the fan 960. I love when he and Duhatchek are on. Elliot could spell Calgary, “CLY”for all I care, or just call them the Flames. the Flames is what counts

NBC in its coverage continues to shove the east coast teams down our throats and still emphasize Crosby and Ovechkin. Its the same mix of Pens, Caps, Rangers, Flyers and Bruins that cycle through all the coverage. They sprinkle in some midwest stuff with Hawks/Blues or maybe some California stuff with Sharks/Kings, but they continue to ignore Canadian teams; more so this year since you guys are playing on your own of course.

I said in another recent broadcasting thread that the league needs more McDavid's, and this right here is a big reason. US sports is really focused on superstar players that generate buzz and excitement. The NHL lacks that tremendously. With the game being much faster these days, hopefully more generational type players are coming through the youth pipeline so there can be several players (with some or all on US teams) that can draw more interest to the sport.
It would be great for the NHL to have several 100 point players per season rather than just one or two. Although the 2019 season did have not just one, but SIX players that reached +100 points (Kucherov got most with 128). If that becomes more the norm, then NHL will at least have several players that they can set performative storylines around.
P.S. And for the 2019 season, if you include Gaudreau, McKinnon (99) and Stamkos (98) in reaching the 100 mark, that would've been nine players reaching the century mark. That was quite the year for goals.

This is sports pal ... I don’t care about Edmonton... give the Edmonton guy his dues but this is Calgary ... when 960 is playing to the transplant (and there is a lot)I understand ... just don’t go overboard .....

Elliott needs a haircut. Looks like a slob.
McDavid is unreal though so it comes with the territory. As long as the Oilers aren't winning Cups I could care less how much McDavid is talked about.

He has more than double the points of our highest scorer. Either he's really good or we have no superstars. I think its both.

We're getting mad about Friedman talking about the best player in the game? Look i hate the greasers and having to deal with McDavid but give the kid credit he is the best in the game and having an insane season.

I would agree as far as a well rounded/200' player...but as an offensive dynamo...not even close at this point.
The thing with McDavid isnt even just his speed like the media always focuses on...but how good and quick his hands are in really tight areas and moving the puck from forehand to backhand. Best I have ever seen in that department.

Frankly I'm surprised with all the backlash against the desire to hear less about the Oilers player on this site.
Two things are possible, to acknowledge McDufus is clearly the best player, and to hate both him and his team immensely.

But the additional ice time given to McDavid (and Draisaitl) that allows them to get those points, also takes time away from the rest of the forwards. Players usually need to get more than the bare minimum of ice time to get their offense going. How many fewer goals are they getting as a result?
|
I don't have an eye on the analytics right now, but I'd have to believe that a tired Connor McDavid or Leon Draisaitl can score more goals than a fresh Jujhar Khaira, Devin Shore, Josh Archibald, Tyler Ennis, etc. etc.

I guess I look at it this way:
Isn’t this what we want? To be having a superstar on the Oilers that we, as Flames fans, love to hate? I think back to how bland this “rivalry” was for so many years. For example, think back to 2011-2014. Both teams sucked, were boring and it seemed like this rivalry was a thing of the past. This is what it’s all about. I yearn for the days of hating Gretz, Mess, etc. and having a team that was built to overcome them. This isn’t quite at that level (I assume) but each team has hope, is decent and features a lot of compelling storylines. That’s a place I’ve wanted this rivalry to be for so many years. It’s pretty fun.
I’m a huge Friedman fan. I basically grew up with him since his days on The Score. I look forward to the 31 Thoughts podcast every week. I think he’s great at what he does. Just my .02.

No, thanks.
I will be perfectly happy to see the Oilers never win another hockey game for all eternity, and to get blitzed by a half-dozen goals every single god-damned time.

His shot and ability to score from distance are remarkable as well. He has an absolute laser.
