The Flames now have a top notch head coach, a top notch goalie, and a GM who is strong on player acquisition and contracts. This is a lot of what anyone could hope for.

Say goodbye to the mental fragility this team has been guilty of for so many seasons.

I think you still can: round 1 wild card cross-over, round 2 in your division, then on you go

(not this year, of course)

I think it is likely that this ws a decision made in close consultation with ownership, but I don't believe for a second that Sutter was hired by anyone but Treliving.
By default any head coach is hired by the General Manager. However, Brad Treliving, despite any and all options, settled or decided on Geoff Ward as his head coach only months ago.

Rumours going back had ownership in favor of Sutter. Yes, those are rumours and speculation. In that time they have had Gulutzan, Peters, and Ward. And, if pressed for resume and tenure, there has been Boudreau, Gallant, Laviolette, etc. during that time.

I agree that there was no stupid conspiracy regarding coups and whatnot, and I'm hesitant to say ownership was adverse to hiring a premium dollar coach. I argue that it seems clear, from his hiring pattern, that Treliving was given autonomy and committed to hiring within his own vision of the team...which I think we can agree has been an ongoing flaw and failure. This is outside what we have seen Treliving operating.

If anything, given Treliving's record I expected a Huska promotion and/or general restructuring or re-arrangement with the current staff. Buying time or shifting pieces around.

Hiring Darryl Sutter, out of all people, was completely out of left field for me. It's not a shock a change was made. It's the specific hiring of Sutter that blows me away. This is so out of style for Treliving, which leads me to induce this was a call made above or beyond from Treliving.

No problem being wrong, just an educated observation.

God darn it, I was just going to go to bed right after finishing the game about 20 mins ago but caught the news on Sportsnet of Walter Gretzky’s passing so came to FoI. Guess I’ll be up for a while getting caught up.

Yay!! Sutter!!! Psyched!

I think Sam Bennett is in trouble. Nothing Sutter doesn't like more than trying a fancy toe drag through 3 guys or having controller disconnect issues on your way back into the zone. He also expects you to win your share of board battles.

Sutter won't play you if he doesn't trust you. He also isn't going to ask you where you want to play.

Will be very interesting. This is going to be the ultimate wake up call.

Yeah. And at the same time, do you really think Sutter doesn’t know how to teach players and set expectations ?

Sam Bennett isn’t the tail that wags the dog of the organization, as obsessed as people are about him

He’s a guy who has spent years without a good coach

And he is among many others

Darryl Sutter behind the bench with Blasty jerseys on the ice will be one hell of a nostalgia trip.

If Sutter does have to go through NHL quarantine, I would pay to see an Ipad fastened to some sort of rover with Sutter mug on it behind the bench.
