Jesus, this guy went 5-5 in the play-in/playoffs last year and got fired. Amazing.

I honestly think that Quenneville would be getting pretty similar results here if he were the head coach. The Flames will start turning things around as players start moving out.

I’m not sure if there is a standard for coaching contracts. But employment contracts in general have several different potential outcomes. There might be a provision for early termination payment. Or to present value the future salary and he gets a lump sum. If it was just his regularly schedules salary, his new job salary would be deducted as a mitigation of loss.
|
Most coaching contracts have generally provided guaranteed payment with no mitigation to the team(employer) for termination without cause. Generally, payment continues even if they take other employment. That said, all of the conditions you mentioned could be in a coaches contract and this type of information is not public. Most top tier coaches won’t sign with very much (any) conditions for termination without cause.

Oh, I don’t think there would be any termination at will provisions. I do think that even if they had just normal payments, they might offer a lump sump, in which case Julien could take the money and then look for work without worry.

I disagree. Ward's player utilization, including putting scrubs on Monahan's RW, overusing an aging Gio, and overplaying Markstrom, has been atrocious. The downgrade from Lindholm to Simon/Leivo far exceeds any upgrade they are getting moving Lindholm to centre; why must they move their only top 9 natural RW to C when they already have more depth at that position than any other? The Flames have actually had considerably more player turnover than most teams over the past three years (the only holdouts I can think of being Monahan, Gaudreau, Gio, Bennett, and Backlund) and are arguably better on paper than the team that won the conference. Moving Gaudreau or Monahan out will almost certainly leave the team worse off, because any return will be of a lower calibre than the player they will be replacing. And due to their contracts, Gio, Bennett, and Backlund can only be moved out if sweeteners are added.
So the only realistic options are either to try something they haven't done in the past decade, which is to hire a head coach who has won something in that role, or to burn the whole thing down, trade away any player who will return a future asset, tank hard, and build from scratch through the draft.

It's pretty crazy how since 1989, this franchise has only been able to win a REAL playoff round when they have had a top end or Stanley Cup winning head coach behind the bench.
Any other year, first round playoff exit.
It's an astonishing coincidence that a really good coach can get you results.

Damn, Burke was able to work with Dubnyk and bring him back from oblivion after the Oilers destroyed his game.
What can he do with a tandem like Price and Allen?

I imagine not much for vets like that. Sounds more like his job is their whole goalie development, which they’re gonna need soon.

Those coaches also managed, between them, 4 missed playoffs and a first round exit. Hartley won 3 more PO games in 4 years than Ward won in 1.

Because Sigalet is no longer coaching and was replaced by Labarbera.

You'd think that firing the goalie coach is something that could have waited until today.
