To fix this mess is going to require one of the very best GMs. We need someone that can size up this core and what the problem is.

If this core really consists of coach killers I'd be ok with the new GM moving all of them out.

Frankly I don’t even know what his role is aside from working to get Johnny signed (which at the end of the day required Treliving to agree to the timing issue). He’s not a contract negotiation guy, he doesn’t seem to be a scouting guy.

These are the names that came up for Pittsburgh before they hired Hextall:

“Jason Botterill, Chris Drury, Ron Hextall, Mark Hunter, Tom Fitzgerald – who was just a GM in New Jersey – Peter Chiarelli, Scott Mellanby, Mike Gillis, Laurence Gillman, John Ferguson Jr., Mike Futa”

Strike 1: Signing Gio for 6 years at 6.75/year starting when he was 33.

Strike 2: Signing Neal for 5 years at 5.75/year.

Strike 3: Signing Ward to a 2 year deal this past offseason.

Apple and a roadmap...

Disagree. Giving 6 years of big money to someone who is already 33 is going to come back to haunt you more times than not. The deal was working out fine for the first 3 years but not so much since then...

Come on, re-signing Gio was a no brainer. He was our #1 Dman. Gio won a ####ing Norris trophy while on this current deal.

Tre has made enough mistakes worthy of criticism. The Gio deal is not one of them.

It was amazing value for a couple
Good value for two
Bad value for two
Seems about right
There’s only one year remaining. No biggie

The consensus always was the contract was going to one where the first few years would be great value. The last two would be much less desirable. So, I have no issues with the contract overall.

Gio wasn't good last year, he's not good this year and he won't be good next year.

He should have been signed for larger AAV but shorter term. Maybe something like $8M/year for 4 years.

Don’t forget the Flames have not one, not two, but three assistant general managers on staff too. Treliving is such a Wizard he needs the largest staff of assistants in the League to...build a mediocre NHL team with a mediocre prospect base.

I guess when you’re reportedly in on everything, i.e., perpetually low-balling everyone, you need hired help.

The problem with the Gio contract was squandering the good years and we're stuck paying off the bad years with nothing to show for it.

Every time I think back to that trade deadline I vibrate with fury. The team had everything going right for that year and needed to push their chips in because they should have known that Father Time would come for the captain eventually.

Outside the carousel of coaches, I'd say by far BT's biggest mistake is trading for Hamonic. Completely unnecessary trade even if Hamonic didn't continue to fall off the rails.

Imagine what those pieces could have been used on instead. Essentially gave up what we traded for Hamilton for nothing.

Agree 100% the amount of picks he dealt for Hamonic crippled his ability to add meaningful players at the deadline or future offseason and thinned out the prospect pool.

They needed a top 4 RH D and they misjudged Hamonic (and also Brodie’s ability to play with him). As advertised, Hamonic was what they needed, and his character and work ethic were great. Didn’t work out.

His biggest mistake was Neal. His off ice issues were knowable and Treliving didn’t find out about them.

Hamonic made everyone he played with worse. Both Brodie and Hanifin became trade bait because they looked awful next to Hamonic. He cost a massive price for not even being a top 4 D. He was also coming off a pretty terrible year the season before the Flames picked him up.

Neal was a terrible move no doubt but he cost cap space. The loss of those picks for Hamonic took away some key assets that thinned out the prospect pool and limited the ability to be in on other trades

Yeah, I'd agree.

His biggest mistake though IMO, was something he DIDN'T do, which was trade for ROR. I'm like a broken record on this, but it was a huge miss. If he trades for ROR, he doesn't sign Neal and we go into that 1st Peters season with:

Gaudreau - Monahan - Lindholm
Tkachuk - O'Reilly - XXXXX

...and never end up with Lucic.

Another mistake that bugged me at the time was not signing Robin Lehner. Good goalies were also available as a result of the Vegas expansion draft (Grubauer).
Lehner was available around 3 times and was clearly a good goalie.
The Flames then wasted picks on old average goalies instead.

And I'm going to get trashed for this, but the Flames are now paying Markstrom, who is 31 years old, injured, and has a pretty bad 90.9% for the season. This should be the best year of the contract.
To be fair, I think Markstrom's stats will improve. He's clearly the best goalie the Flames have had in a while.
I'll just say that I'm still worried about the long term effects of this contract.
