One player for player trade of significance in nearly seven years. There seems to be a reluctance to trade players from the roster IMO.

His biggest moves have been his free agent signings which up until this year have been awful and his trading 3 high picks for an average d-man who 3 years after the trade had to take a PTO. He has done some good moves but his misses outweigh his hits. I dont question his effort but the results arent there.
He did do a good trade with Carolina, i will say that.

His biggest moves have been in-house contracts, specifically the RFA contracts. The prices for Gio, Backlund, Monahan, Gaudreau, Hanifin, Tkachuk, Lindholm are all bargains compared to their peers and has left cap space to be filled with very good secondary players (which has unfortunately been utilized poorly on Brouwer, Neal, Lucic etc..).

true enough, then he would be a great assistant GM as they often handle the contract negotiations. I just feel like he has had enough time and what we see is a team that is seldom engaged, ready to play and appear to be allergic to contact. Whether that is the players or the coaching, he is responsible and he has failed.

I’m counting big trades with picks too - I don’t see why they don’t. So Hamilton and Hamonic count. He also did a trade recently where $6M players went each way.
As for getting rid of roster players? He had a Brodie for Kadri trade signed, he moved young guys who were on the roster like Baertschi and Granlund and Kulak.
I don’t think he’s more reluctant than any other typical GM around his big name players - it’s a huge move that can go very badly (Boston with Thornton, Vancouver with Neely, Calgary with Gilmour).

Taking a while to get to 5000

The proposed Kadri trade - That was a deal based on hope. He hoped he could convince a player to waive their NMC and in the process it leaked to the Flames player that they were going to be moved and then in the end, he wasn't.
That was a failure.
He takes his swings, no doubt.

Obviously it was a failed trade. But that’s irrelevant to the point that was being made - that Treliving is afraid to trade away his regulars (and also the changed goalposts of it having to be player for player).

People keep saying this, but does it really compare unfavourably with other teams?
EDM: anything of significance since Hall or Eberle?
VAN: ?
WPG: they have been more active for sure. As has MTL.
But few teams can claim much activity in the way of significant player swaps. At least to my aging memory.

I do wish that one went through.
It would have changed the structure of the roster in a good way. Brodie was already gone.

I said somewhere that in hindsight, Toronto would have gone for Gio at the same time last year, or before Brodie was gone, and then you could keep Brodie with the Gio salary.

I just want to say hearing Warreners little rant was like a breathe of fresh air.
We keep hearing how 'tight' the room is, I agree with Warrener that's BS. Something stinks with this team and I don't see how that just works itself out and they go on to be perennial contenders.
Time to really shake the core up. This team is 'tight' like old retired guys going golfing, not 'tight' like soldiers going to battle.
If they come out flat tonight, Ward should lose his god damn marbles on the team, and be all sweaty and red in the face to start the 2nd period. Wishful thinking I know.
Or a fight at practice or something I don't know. I'm so sick of hearing the talk. It's getting really old. Do your talking on the ice, how hard is that?

I get the sentiment behind statements like this, you want to see some emotional response from this team, you want a sign that this team cares. Unfortunately we have seen multiple coaches publicly scold this team, multiple team meetings, hundreds of player interviews saying "we need to be better" etc, press gatherings during off seasons saying things like "full forensic audit", honestly the list goes on. Nothing, I repeat NOTHING, is going to change the results of this team until there are substantial changes made in the locker room. Not a coach rant, or another team meeting, or a fight at practice or whatever. The make up of this team is fundamentally flawed, both in the locker room and on the ice. Until substantial changes are made with the core elements of this team ie, Gaudreau, Monahan, Giordano, Bennett, Tkachuk, Lindholm then we will continue to see the same pedestrian results comprised of lackluster efforts, and ultimately an exhaustingly boring product.
I, like you, would love to cheer for a team that works its ass off and sticks up for one another. This team is the antithesis of this and it's embarrassing.

Personally, I hate hearing the coach say 'we need to work harder'. That just screams that they don't have any answers, IMO.
