Game Takes: Canucks 5 Flames 1
- Flames start slowly again
- Far too many turnovers
- Better game territorially
- Can't solve Brayden Holtby

I feel for Bennett, you start him as your 4th line LW then quarter way through the game you move him back to centre. Yet you cannot load up/bump up Lindholm to the first line RW in-game because they feel it will be an adjustment for the player.
You are down, you load up the top line with your top players. Pens do it with Crosby/Malkin, heck Edmonton does it with Drai and McJesus. Ward needs to go if he can’t make simple in game adjustments.
Top that off, you have Rittich start the third not come in with 15 minutes remaining. What an embarrassment to Markstrom. He made the same mistake during the playoffs with Talbot and Rittich. Just terrible and frustrating to see such an amateur coach.

I agree that the team is playing poorly, look unmotivated and are very frustrating to watch. There are a lot of negatives at this point. However, I am one of those morons that continues to look for a silver lining and remain as optimistic as possible.
For that I’m looking at the division as a whole. Outside of the Leafs at the top and the Sens at the bottom, the rest of the north is succeeding in mediocrity. Teams don’t look consistent and you can find the warts on any those teams. After tonight 3 points separates 2nd and 6th. When (fingers crossed) or if (seems more possible) the Flames can put it together a bit, I still think they are a top 4 team in this division. I think the next 4 games are critical. If you sweep the Oilers and take 1 against the leafs, then you’re probably looking for sure at 4th place maybe even 3rd. Then you get 5 out of the next 6 games against Ottawa.
So we shall see where my optimism level sits at the end of the day Feb. 24th. But for now I’ll cling to the bit of hope I have left.

It’s not “absolutely insane”. It’s a coaching decision a lot of people agreed with and a lot didn’t. Many many people wanted Lindholm down the middle because the Flames don’t have an elite centre and they think two very good ones will make it up. And a lot of people don’t think Bennett can handle 3C full time.

Remember when we had a real head coach and a team that led the conference? I miss those days man.

I think it's more showing some respect to our best player. Markstrom specifically asked to play all the games against the Canucks, so if after the 2nd, Markstrom still wants to go, Ward has to let him try.

I'm just guessing here. Markstrom wanted to go back in, Ward thought if we get the next one early it's 4-2 and who knows what can happen, especially if Markstrom shuts the door. After it's 5-1 it's really really over and Rittich is in.
Personally I would have put Rittich in to start the 3rd, but I do see a reason why they put Markstrom back out.

I agree, we're definitely not out of the playoff picture but the best case scenario is looking more and more like being a mediocre team in a mediocre division and that doesn't bode well for our chances moving forward.

The martyr complex people have here is honestly amazing.
Don't like something about the team? Bring it up, talk about it, justify it. But don't come in talking about preferring the team loses, or ridiculing others for caring or even watching the games to begin with. There's no point to that.

Sigh.
That poster DID bring up something he didn’t like about the team and he DID justify it. He said he’d rather see this team lose because he thinks that would ultimately lead to the betterment of the franchise, as it may mean this core would finally be broken up. Then I agreed with him.
You might benefit from actually reading my posts, as never once did I say I don’t care about this franchise. I want to see this team win a Stanley cup just as much as anyone.
This will be my only reply on this, as it’s been beaten to death already.

CGY waits to see what the opponent is going to do. They come out on their heels. They did push back earlier and the first was even in shots but VAN had all the jump.
Monahan line getting hemmed in by VAN fourth line a few times is problematic regardless of who the right winger is.
I honestly don't know if it's the players inability to come out ready or their defensive posture allows opponents who get into CGY zone to get sustained time and shots and CGY just gets used to playing in their end early. But neither coaches nor players have remedied it.
The first moments of this game were CGY unable to handle the pressure and just turning the puck over. Maybe just tip hat to VAN? Shots were 5 - 1 VAN, CGY pushed but Holtby made saves.
Starts are an issue. Relying on goalies and come backs are a bad way to play and CGY knows it but where is the improvement? They need answers either player prep or tactics something has to change and get better.

I said in the GT that this is exactly what I thought happened, and that Ward may have put a lot of stock (maybe too much) into Markstrom’s wishes.

Doubtful. Ward is a players coach.
