A. It’s a huge exaggeration to say that “no one thought” he would sign. Most people expected he’d sign.
B. It took a deal which lost a year of ELC to get him to sign, which was the Flame’s only trading card.

I doubt it.

He certainly would not have said what he did, why would he? He would have said a brief answer and that is it. Are you telling me you think Eric Francis is getting info directly from Gaudreau that is different? We just saw a couple guys who wanted out telling their GM's that and they moved. People who take the media like Francis as in the know is just mind boggling to me. It would be like if he told everybody a duck is not a duck but a goose and then everything visually and scientifically showing it was a duck but people believing that it is in fact a goose. This is a great example of how the media can make someone believe something despite the actual facts showing otherwise. Hell, Trump has a huge following because of it.

It’s a huge exaggeration to say that “most people expected him to sign” one more season of College and he could of signed wherever he wanted.

Exactly which many people thought was exactly what would happen.

This is the key, it's not just Francis that is saying this.
Leslie, Boomer, Steinberg, etc have all made similar claims. I don't think this is the media just making this up, I think the organization knows that they will be in tough to re-sign Gaudreau when he hits UFA.
Not to say it can't happen but I do think the organization likely knows that he wouldn't mind being closer to home.
Edit: And that's before you decide if you actually want to re-sign him. He's already shown signs of his play declining the last 18 months, and I'd be very hesitant to invest another 7-8 years and $8M+ per season for him.

Tkachuk will also be starting a massive new contract in a couple years. Add to that a salary cap that might not increase for half a decade, and we might have to move one of these two weather they both want to stay or not. If Johnny is hesitant to sign this coming summer you don't risk losing him for nothing the year after, you move him.

There are very little facts that tell us with any certainty if he will re-sign or not.
When we say "actual facts showing otherwise" what facts are these?

At this point, no one knows Johnny's intentions other than he himself. It's all speculation and gut feel. My gut feel is he has little reason to not explore UFA and see if they can make something work in Philly. He'll always cherish his time in Calgary, but all signs does seem to point in him signing with Philly if they want him.

I expect the Flames to hold onto Johnny far too long and get far too little (if anything) in return for him when he eventually moves on, one way or another. It's the Flames way.
(At least we'll have all those deep playoff runs to fondly recall when we ponder his time here.)
But go ahead Treliving, prove me wrong. I'd love it.

What does that have to do with anything?
2 guys that wanted to get dealt that are under contract and have no say in their final destination....got dealt.
This will be a guy with a singular destination in mind because of family and where he is comfortable, has already made life altering money, who is UFA and can choose where he goes.....and has stated it as a place he would like to play some day.
There is a reasonable argument to be made that the Flyers may not want/afford him which leads to him having to go elsewhere and at that point maybe the Flames have the inside track based on familiarity and team competitiveness.
But to suggest that if presented the same deal from both teams he would choose the Flames when his bride to be, his family and in fact his entire non-hockey life is around Philly...is pretty easy to scoff at.
This is from 3 1/2 years ago.
What has changed since, other than his bride-to-be also now living there and a very good friend playing with the Flyers?

"You never know in sports. It's a lot of support back here in South Jersey and the Philly area, they follow me pretty well."

The fact that he has said the opposite of what Francis is speculating. We know what Gaudreau has said about the Flames, it came directly from him. That is factual compared to Eric Francis theorizing. Could he be just trying to placate the fan base? Possibly. However taking Eric Francis guessing as fact as some posters on here are is really bizarre.

What has changed? The guy just said he loves playing in Calgary and could see himself playing his whole career here. Speculation is fine, maybe he will go to Philly or somewhere else when or if he hits UFA but stating that as a known thing like Francis and some posters here are is where I take issue.

I don't even take anything Eric Francis says into account.
I will never read a Eric Francis article and I turn the channel when he comes on it.
I am going off of my own feeling of the situation and common sense.
If he was going to stay long term, his fiance would be living in Calgary already. She doesn't and he just built a rather nice place on Jersey Shore a year or so ago.
This is nothing against Gaudreau, he needs to make the best decision for him and his family and I have no hard feelings about it. But it's going to happen. I would count in it.

Gaudreau+Bennett for Konecny + Patrick
This is what would make me happy from Philly.

AV is one of those coaches that prefers veteran players to young players. I suppose it comes down to trying to win a cup with Giroux. I sense that any deal with the Flyers would revolve around either Voracek or JVR coming back to which I don't think is great for the Flames unless the deal is sweetened with young talent.

Maybe his NEW fiance didn't come to Calgary due to the current pandemic floating around. I am sure his wife would adjust to where her man makes millions of dollars v forcing him to move because she wants to be close to her friends. How many players have purposely signed with their hometown teams when they reach free agency?

Well, Konecny was just healthy scratched over the weekend. So that's a start. But I think the reality is that Gaudreau is a much better player than Konecny. The Flyers get to draw in another superstar at a controlled cap hit for another 2 years with no fears about re signing him afterwards. The Bennett-Patrick swap gives them a very good playoff contributor and tough guy to help them get through the east.
The flames get a lesser but still electric forward and get to take a chance on Patrick to make up the difference.
