Yes, they have. Was it sort of expected? New team. New city. New players to get to know. New systems to get used to. No training camp to learn these things. So should we expect there to be an adjustment period? Yes. Were we all hoping for more? Yes, but the immediate benefit is understandable.
Conversely, what about Bennett? How has he been so far this season? Outside of a third period in a game where we got our heads caved in, he's been horrible. And this is from a player who knows the players, knows the systems, knows the city, knows the situation he's in and how he needs to perform. How has he been? Complete #### to be honest. The aura of those playoff games has faded away and now people are finally starting to figure out the real Sam Bennett, the one predicted to return, is back.
I mean, if it were not a Milan Lucic deflection of a patented Sam Bennett flutterball from the point, Bennett would have nothing to show for this season except for his green jacket lead in the clubhouse. That is all on Sam Bennett and no one else. Bennett needs to focus on the things he can control, and that is his own play. If he comes in and plays like he did in the post-season we aren't having this conversation in any shape or form.
Quote:
Could Bennett be more disciplined? Sure. But given his tenacious playing style, penalties are going to happen no matter what. Tkachuk takes a ton of dumb penalties, too, but he doesn't get benched or buried on the fourth line immediately after taking one. Bennett on the other hand is on such a short leash it is no wonder he plays like he's squeezing the stick so tight knowing that the next mistake is going to bury him with the coaches.
Not saying Bennett hasn't had a hand in his own fate, too. But there's clear favoritism with this team and Bennett is on the wrong end of it.
|
The problem with Bennett is we know he can be tenacious. He shows that for short bursts, the latest being last post-season. But he displays that with so little consistency. He is pedestrian for the most part, going unnoticeable on most nights. That's the problem. That's why coaches don't trust him. They don't know what they are going to get from shift-to-shift let alone game-to-game or week-to-week. That's on Sam Bennett. No one else. Time to move on from him once and for all.

No one. He sits here like he did in Montreal. My point was quasi sarcastic I suppose given how difficult trades are at this point in time, a guy who has passed covid tests and can just get on the plane with you now is pretty convenient. But no its not a trade that makes sense or is it one I'd want to see

I wouldn't mind Puljujarvi, Jost, or Compher.

If you could build a package with Bennett for Ravello, that'd be cool.
I just hope if it isn't a pick, they try for a decent RHS RW.

If I remember correctly Bennett missed most of his draft+1 season with an injury, and then played only a dozen or so games in Kingston before joining the Flames for the playoffs.
I think more than anything the timing for him was very awkward. He made the team in 2015, and the team was pretty terrible that year. He most likely would have benefitted from some extended time in the AHL, but he was also a top-njne forward on a rebuilding team.

We don’t want Mete either. He’s tiny, and doesn’t do much to make up for it.

Trade him out od the division. We don't want to end up facing playoff Bennett, especially pissed off playoff Bennett.

Probably mentioned somewhere but his 2..5 qualifying offer and arb rights make it unlikely Bennett is a flame beyond this season anyway. He’ll play somewhere next year for 1-1.5m but likely not the team he finishes the year with.
Throw in the expansion draft and I imagine his value is zero. Maybe a project for project swap.

It's too late to pass on him now. The Oilers are stuck with him.

Yup same ppg pace as Bennett had last year with his 12 points. Half the cost too, and signed for next year.

Bennett going to another market is going to be interesting ... honestly the player is a bit of a study on some of the metrics available these days.
When you take the last three seasons of xGF vs actual GF Bennett is the fourth unluckiest forward out of 498 forwards that have played 500 or more minutes.
But is he?
The guys at the bottom aren't exactly a list of players I'd be targeting.
Wayne Simmonds
Magnus Paajarvi
Kyle Clifford
Brock McGinn
Brandon Dubinsky
Andrew Cogliano
Pierre-Edouard Bellemare
Sean Kuraly
Brad Richardson
Ryan Kesler
Jordan Staal
Tobias Rieder
Sam Bennett
Lucas Wallmark
Mattias Janmark
Jordan Martinook
The more I watch Bennett the more I wonder if his lack of finish ... both in shooting and passing tanks his ability to finish to the level that models suggest.
Torn ... you don't wish the player future failure, but hate to see Calgary get burned if he figures it out.

That scenarios not Calgary getting burned though. That's calgary getting their just deserts.
Ar this point, trade him. If he succeeds, good for him, Flames failed to find that role he needed. If not, whatever.

So Bennett was great and Calgary held him back?
The extremes around Sam Bennett are head shaking to me.

What? No. That’s not it at all.
But if he succeeds elsewhere, who cares? That’s not Calgary getting burned. It’s just an unfortunate reality. There could be dozens of reasons why he didn’t work out here. Most likely is that he’s not very good.
You’re the only one taking an extreme here.
