Another good 1st period. They're definitely giving a lot more fight on puck battles so far. Tanev impressed me a bunch.
Markstrom, regardless of your feelings about Rittich. Is a full order of magnitude better than our #2 goalie.
Every game that I watch Markstrom in net, I'm awed that he is a Flame. He's going to be the Flames MVP this year.

Was nice to see Gio jump into a scrum and tackle a guy which I feel like I never see.

I would just like to make it known that the points race in the Neal/Lucic trade continues to get tighter.
Neal has recorded 35 points with the Oilers.
Lucic is now up to 29 points in Calgary.
That's worrying for Edmonton, considering that Neal provides very few positive attributes when he isn't scoring.

Yeah but age-based regression has hit Gio like a brick wall. There's no way you protect him. He would understand as it's part of the business.

Can I ask why you are starting a discussion about losing one of our best players right now who wanted to sign here from a division rival?
With all the other issues to be discussed, seems weird.

I love Gio but I’m fully on board with exposing him. I doubt Seattle would even take him at this point.
It’s win win for the Flames. Keeping Gio around certainly wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world.

Apparently the solution to all of hockey's problems is a players-only meeting! Stanley Cup here we come!

Imagine if they had a players-only meeting on a train, though.

Might be a slow start but this was my concern when a lot of ppl wanted him signed to some ridiculous contract in the offseason. And all this swooping skating he is doing this year is really off putting to me. Because its not helping plays materialize other than allowing the defense to close in.
To my eyes, hes still too easy to knock down or take the puck from in the corners.
His bread and butter seems to be net front and a quick strike.

I didn't start any discussion. I was replying to another post on the same topic.
Tanev has been incredible to start the year. But I really don't know how likely it is that continues... he's riding quite the PDO streak so far.

Tanev is great, and the way he's great is you barely notice him, he just stops plays and get the puck out or to someone.
My thought with Gio is he doesn't need to play 28 minutes a night, and that's what is showing. So they need to expand the minutes of the other d pairs and protect Gio's aging chassis from too much more abuse.

You’re not a player, ergo, you were not invited.

Now we've changed it again and this time it isn't as ####.

Gio would probably say to Treliving, "save another player, I highly doubt they will take me"

Yeah, we can honestly take about %60 worth of workload off of Gio's plate now. The other 5 d men are fully up to the task in my eyes.

Totally agree with his net front presence but there are already guys (Monahan, Tkachuk, Lucic, Bennett) who do that better than him so it's just an awkward place for him to be.
I think he also needs to work on slowing down his game and being more patient when he doesn't have the puck.
His explosiveness is great and his hand eye is an asset in the front of the net. But I'd argue he's near god awful at winning puck battles and he's too easy to knock over.
Definitely someone to continue to watch closely, but not worth a large contract yet.
