It was a reality show where the contestants were competing for money... except everybody but one person was a paid actor and that person doesn't find out the joke is on them until the final episode. There were two seasons. The first season was somewhat amusing, and the Schmo figured it out during the final ceremony where they were to reveal the "winner". I can't remember much about the 2nd season, but I think there was a male and a female schmo and one of them figured out what was going on quite early.

Neat.

Sorry, but 'Reality TV' makes me depressed and more than a little 'stabby.'

JPL is arguably one of the most beautiful places I have ever been to. The drive from Banff up the Columbia Icefields Parkway is also very special. I just love the Rocky Mountains. Living in Vancouver in the Cascadia Range I have a deeper appreciation for the dramatic peaks and deep valleys of the Rockies. Anyways the Bachelor is a terrible show with a huge audience and, as has been mentioned, this should bring a lot of positive attention to that area for tourism.

Pretty sure it was Season 2 that Jonathan "j-Roc'' "Jonovision" Torrens on it?

Curious if those who had their reservations canceled receive anything for the cancellation?

Like a preferred rebooking date at the old rate, or a discount on future bookings, or a cash payment now?

What? How does this work? Isnt it counter-productive to have recognizable actors among your clandestine troupe?

Did they just find the dumbest human on Earth? Who wouldnt immediately think: "Hey, its Kristen Wiig, either shes got a thing for Canadian Tax Accountants or I'm totally getting set the hell up by this very fishy and shady production company...I wonder which is more likely?...."

That was one of her first breaks. I remember reading up on Joe Schmoe (out of nostalgia since I watched it when it was being broadcast) on wikipedia and being shocked to find out she was on it.

And I think while Jonathan Torrens was pretty well-known in Canada, he was still new in the US.

It was an American show circa 2003, so they wouldn't know Jonathan Torrens. I think it was before Wiig got her break with SNL too.

Wiig wasn't on SNL til 2005. She was doing improv and working with the Groundlings at the time.

Was Joe Schmoe at least half-assed attractive?

Because...if Kristen Wiig...and, not necessarily the successful actress herself, but someone with the looks and humour of Kristen Wiig was coming on to me I'd be looking around the room for cameras too...

It wasn't a dating show. It was called Lap of Luxury and it was a contest for $100 000

The first season of Joe Schmo wasn't a dating show. It was just a random group of reality show stereotypes trying to win money.

Wiig's character was a therapist who was more screwed up than anyone she was helping.

I just discovered that Joe Schmoe did season 3 in 2013.
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0377024...tt_eps_yr_2013

A guy is thrust into a fake reality TV show thinking he'll become a bounty hunter and win $100,000... sounds really far fetched. If they pulled the wool over his eyes for the entire season then I don't know how he could be trusted to be a good bounty hunter.

Average Joe had one great episode. If you remember the premise was that a bunch of average Joe's get first crack at meeting this really hot girl and then some time through they bring in a bunch of cool doods. Anyways, the episode where the one jagoff real estate slowly realized he had been brought in as one of the nerds was awesome.

Perhaps, just perhaps...and remember I've not only never seen this show but today is the first I've ever even heard of it.

But...is it possible...that they didnt pick the smartest people to be on this show?

I know its a wild suggestion. Some would even suggest crazy or insane....I'm just wondering 'what if' the people they selected for this show are incredibly stupid?

Clearly they learned from season two where the female figured it out. I read a blog of hers where she claimed to have figured it out as she pulled up to the house they would be filming from. Everything about it over the next two days really confirmed her suspicions and she wasn't able to hide that she was on to them so they pulled her out and paid her to be a part of the act on the guy.

Yeah, the third season was pretty bad. It really had no relation to the previous seasons other than the host and the name.

If anyone hasn't seen it I highly recommend the first season of The Joe Schmo Show. It's as much social experiment as it is entertainment. They were cautious in season 1 and tried to balance the absurdity of reality TV with reality to keep the guy from figuring it out.

They started as it being purely entertainment, but as Matt Kennedy Gould (the contestant) started to show his character they switched emphasis to showcase just how genuine, kind, and compassionate he was. It's a bit dated in its stereotypes, but it still holds up. Gould never figured it out until the final reveal, and he even had some resentment towards some of the other characters (like the "Best Friend" character). It was all real to him no matter how outlandish each situation they threw at him was. He took it in stride as just 'reality TV'.
