This is why you don’t bring up politics in the work place, if that in fact is the primary reason. I don’t think it is.

I also am starting to think that players just simply don’t want to play in Columbus. Rick Nash, Johansen, Panarin, Bobrovsky, Anderson (wanted a humongous raise), and now PLD.

I don’t know what the case may be, but I think the problem MAY be bigger. Just my pure speculation.

I think you’ve got to stay in the market for PLD if you’re Treliving. This screams a fleece in the making, like the ROR and Seguin deals.

This was reminiscent of when the aliens stole the stars power in Space Jam. He looked like he was a novice out there.

That said, I'd be gunning hard with Bennett+ Any D man not named Rasmus Andersson + 1st right now. Many people will slag on me for that but if we can use our LD depth to get Dubois without giving up Monahan or any other top 6 forward on the team it's an enormous victory.

Its going to be a really really difficult trade.

Having the player getting benched and now struggling is just going to make it worse...

Not sure a trade is going to happen any time soon.

I also won't be shocked if a coaching change occurs

He probably gets traded in the next week and unfortunately for Calgary that’s probably not a good thing for if they want to acquire him.

Going to be tough to move the pieces off the current roster to weaken your team for 14 days while he has to quarantine.

I am intrigued by what happens to the asking price now. Too many teams are interested still for it to come down, but I do think quitting on his teammates like that may cause some teams to hesitate in upping their offer and going all in on PLD.

Two weeks ago I was comfortable with Monahan and a 1st, but honestly that even feels like too much now based on how he’s performed/quit on his team this season.

One thing I don’t understand is if he wanted out that badly why even sign the contract. Just stay home, wait it out, and make them trade you as an RFA.

This going to be a huge issue for the Jackets, no clue why the GM would not address this issue by trading him in the off-season

Players are going to hate to answer the same questions over and over

I doubt a trade happens any time soon

I dont know that i want to give up Hanifin at this point either. He really looks like he is settling in nicely and playing with Tanev makes me think he is about to get going offensively as well. Then there is his contract which is already good value that will only get better if his progression continues.

I guess it would depend on how far away BT sees Mackey from being an every day guy though. And Im not sure he has enough information to determine that as of now. We know he doesn't think Kylington is there thus far, so losing NH may put a real dent into a group of Dmen that have been really good in a small sample size.

If you can make a deal where Hanifin and Bennett are the pieces going to Columbus, the Flames can survive without them until the new players arrive. I don't view either player as being a straw that stirs the drink here in Calgary and their absence from the lineup would not be significantly felt. We fortunately have depth on the blueline to cover Hanifin for a short period. Having the luxury of having Mackey, Kylington, and Stone available makes the loss of Hanifin much easier to take. Bennett's departure would be hardly felt as Ryan would slot into the lineup. If they really need some physicality it can be provided by Rinaldo or Ritchie. The most important thing of this trade is the fact that the team depth is being used and the Flames wouldn't feel the pinch.

I think the Flames are good enough and play a well enough game to have Valimaki or Nesterov in the top 4 until they can grab a top 4 rental LD at the deadline if they had to hypothetically give up Hanifin, Bennett, and our 1st to land Dubois. That would ridiculously stack this team to a point that we’d have great center depth for a good while.

It’s much easier to grab a veteran LD than grabbing a top 6/borderline elite first line center for essentially a cost power than anticipated.

Edit: New Era beat me to it.

The Flames need to ensure PLD at least thinks he would be happy to play in Calgary long-term right now.

If he is, I think this is the Flames' opportunity to upgrade at center without paying too much. This is the ROR situation because PLD's value is low just like ROR's was.

Thus, I would do Monahan plus a 1st because PLD (22 years old) is at least a slightly better player than Monahan (26 years old) right now:

-PLD's projected game score value added for the 2019-20 season according to The Athletic is 1.99. Monahan's is 1.74 (https://theathletic.com/1653561/2020...rojected-gsva/).

-Based on GAR, PLD is a better overall player (85/100 vs. 69/100) because although he is by no means an elite defensive player, he is a much better defensive player than Monahan (33/100 vs. 2/100) ( https://twitter.com/SlapshotShibe/st...368675841?s=20).

-Corsica Hockey is the least flattering to PLD. It combines several metrics into a singular rating, and it gives Dubois a rating of 74.57 and Monahan a player rating of 74.42 (https://www.corsicahockey.com/nhl/pl...tings-rankings).

I would argue that if you trade Monahan + 1st for PLD, you are getting at least a slightly better player currently and the potential of a much better center in the future.

I would simply change the lineup to look like this:

Tkachuk - Lindholm - Dube
Gaudreau - Dubois - Simon
Mangiapane - Backlund - Bennett
Lucic - Ryan - Leivo.

One thing to flag with this stat is that PLD was a better overall player last season but that doesn't mean he's going to be substantially better moving forward.

For example in 18-19 Monahan had an overall game score of 88 (If I'm remembering correctly) and I think if you look at three year view they are pretty close overall to one another.

Dubois holds the advantage is that he's younger and has 4 years of team control left (vs. 3 years for Monahan) but I don't think it's a home run that Dubois ends up being a substantially better player over the next three years of those deals.

IMO this breaks down to:

-Dubois is the better play driver and is more physical.
-Monahan is the better goal scorer, and is more proven.
-Neither are very good defensively.
-Dubois is 4 years younger and has 1 extra season of team control left (Monahan 3 years left on contract, Dubois 2 years on contract, 4 years to UFA)

And I still think that Dubois is getting too much credit as a "playoff performer" for his one great game against the Leafs, that came the day after he was benched. Overall their career playoff numbers are pretty similar.

0.73 PPG - 19 points in 26 games
0.7 PPG - 21 points in 30 games

I'd still make the move likely if it was Monahan + 1st (top 3 protected) but if a bidding war starts for the player then I'm more than happy for the Flames to stay out of it.

Monahan has looked better than he has in 2 years to start this season, so I'm not going to lose sleep if we move forward with Lindholm/Monahan/Backlund as our top 3 centers moving forward.

Just load it up, and dream on.

Tkachuk Dubios Lindholm
Mangiapane Backlund Leivo
Nordstrom Gawdin Simon

Giordano Andersson
Valimaki Tanev
Nesterov Kylington

Whatever combinations going out:

I know a lot are going to get angry about PLD’s giving up on the team and dropping his value. Certainly you expect more from a person paid millions, but there truth is we don’t know what’s pissing him off. Was he promised something which didn’t happen? Did someone bully him? Or is he simply being a spoiled brat. We don’t know. This situation is hard on the team too but it should have been resolved before it was made public and there’s probably both sides to blame in that. Anyway, if Treliving is in on him I hope he does his homework and makes a good decision.

I don’t think a lazy shift all of a sudden tanks the trade value?

I do think a deal gets done quickly but I think a team will still pay up. I am less convinced that it will be the Flames.

The 14 day quarantine is not a reason to not do the deal.

There are 53 games remaining, in a 56 game season. If you think you can improve your team, you do it. They will survive 4 or 5 games without a player or two.

Its early but so far Sam Bennett has looked like regular season Sam Bennett. Imo he needs to be a piece in the trade.

Bennett Ryan pelletier and first 2021 for Dubois.

Not sure if it gets it done but its hard to deal Monahan now that the season has started and he's played well. Still think if Monahan and Johnny can regain their form but do it as a 2nd line combo things will be very exciting this year. Lindholm tkachuk combo with dube has just looked so good that johnny and Monahan are the key to this team and so far its looked very promising

Adding Dubois makes so much sense if you can get it done to dramatically improve team now even if prospect pool looks bare moving forward. Hes young and under control for 4 years. I'd rather go all in and rebuild or retool in 3 to 4 years then to trade Monahan and maybe get better and still lose a first at this point

Gio tanev markstrom aren't young and look to be key players too. Time could be now. Dubois is a huge upgrade on Bennett. Monahan is a maybe
