On a different note, with the playoffs ending in July, will that make it impossible to trade Gaudreau before his NTC kicks in since in his contract it would be July 1st, or do those contract rules push until the nee free agency start?

That is an interesting wrinkle, I think they were pushed back this past season but I am only assuming that because of free agency

After these 2 years he is still an RFA. We dont just lose him for nothing even if he wants to leave. Which I dont believe he will, because we have a good young locker room and will have team success with his addition to this lineup.
We cannot win with Monahans ghost and one dimensional game in the playoffs. It's obvious we are spinning our wheels. It's time to shake up this team, move Monahan and pick up a center with a massive ceiling coming into his prime. A bold move. If Dubois turns into half the player it looks like he's going to, the Flames will be laughing for a decade or more.
Some of these trade proposals are insane. Wouldnt trade Valimaki one for one? Jesus. Think about it this way, if Matthew Tkachuk said he wanted out, would you take guys like Bennett, Hanifin and a first for him? How ridiculous.
Columbus is in win now. Monahan meets the first line center criteria according to his stats and is 26 years old. Has to be attractive to the Jackets as a start. If Columbus truly wants picks and prospects there are many teams that would be able to put together a better offer than the Flames.
We arent going to get a chance for a guy like this again. It just doesn't happen.

My guess is those contract dates move accordingly as well. So, the first day of free agency is the first day of the new season.

If adding a 22 year old C means we might lose a 27 year old winger, Gaudreau, that’s a sacrifice I’m willing to take. Especially seeing as most think there is a good chance JG is going to walk anyway. Gio shouldn’t be much of a worry either. If he wants to stick around and be a life long Flame, pretty sure he will take less than his current $6.75.

I guess if we couldn't afford all of our great players, that would be a very good sign.

If we had something to show for it, sure. But I don't think dumping current assets into PLD gets us any closer to post-season success, and resigning ourselves to losing a good player at the end of next season for nothing plus strong assets now is a pretty big risk to take for a 0.74 PPG player IMO

Great teams have to trade good players all the time. That's the purpose of the salary cap. Unfortunately, it does reward incompentence at times, by allowing poorly run teams to get decent players at less than full value..

For the sake of argument, Tkachuk's PPG for his first three seasons was 0.78. In other words, within range of where PLD sits after his first three years. So the question I will ask is; whose more valuable? Tkachuk or Gaudreau? Tkachuk or Monahan? PPG is a useful stat, but it doesn't tell the whole story.

Not a trade perse but didn't see a general waivers thread:
@PierreVLeBrun
Dallas Stars place Julius Honka on waivers today.
That's it for waivers league-wide today.

I am 100% on board with the bolded. Which to me is why you target a guy like PLD. The existing core has yet to give us anything to show for it.

Rumor: Another Trade Coming from Colorado:
Quote:
Their next move is likely to include a goaltender as the team has more NHL ready defensemen then they need with the likes of youngsters Conor Timmins and Bowen Byram ready for the spotlight.
Look for the team to move out either Erik Johnson or Samuel Girard for a proven goaltender, this according to the Denver Post.
Some names they team is likely interested in would be Marc-Andre Fleury, David Rittich, and Joonas Korpisalo.

I had a feeling Rittich was on the block, along with the usual suspects...
David Rittich
Noah Hanifin
Oliver Kylington
Sam Bennett
Derek Ryan

I'd trade Rittich for Girard, even though we're pretty stacked on the blueline

I would avoid not having a decent proven back-up for Markstrom.

Portzline suggests that Texier is getting a good look at C right now in Columbus and they like what they see. He goes on to infer that having a guy like Texier step up at C would make the idea of trading Dubois for a LW/RW more palatable. Possibly a player like Laine.

I just think it's a big win in terms of value. Girard is 22 and is a nice offensive defenseman. The Flames don't need more defense but it's hard to turn down a W like this.
Louis Domingue has played a bunch of NHL games

It's not even worth discussing. That's about as far fetched of a deal that you could find.
Cup contender trading a blossoming 22 year old top pairing defensemen locked in at 5 million per season until 2027 for a pending UFA back up goalie? Bonkers.
Not to mention Rittich isn't even an upgrade on Grubauer or Francouz.
Girard played more minutes than anybody on the Avs in the regular season last year and was third in the playoffs behind Makar and Mackinnon.

This might be a hot take, but I can almost guarantee that Wolf would perform better than Domingue if they were both in the NHL.
This is despite that fact that Wolf is much younger and has no NHL experience.
But obviously, this wouldn't be a great situation. Much better to keep Rittich around. He's the perfect secondary goalie.
