Mike Awesome passes away
Not sure if the casual wrestling fans would know who he is but he was an ECW mainstay and quite a talented bigman much like bambam who also died not too long ago..he was found hanging on feb 17th..rip mike.

Back in the day when I used to watch this guy was truly awesome. He was like 300 lbs and he would just dive over the top rope and do crazy arial stuff you would never see a man his size do. Not to mention how he would just destroy his opponents with brute force. Wrestling may be fake but I guarantee, you would be hurting for a week after getting in the ring with that guy. RIP

I remember his gimmick in WCW that 70's guy Mike Awesome.......good stuff. RIP. My theory has come true again. You'll notice that wrestler deaths seem to come in spurts and waves. This latest wave includes Mike Awesome and Bam Bam.

Lance Storm had this to say about his former partner (Team Canada),etc. Very nice write up. I've been going to Lance's website a lot over the years, he seems like a class act.

Watching the new ECW last week, I was a just thinking of Mike Awsome and how he could fit in (kinda of "where are they now" thoughts).
Very sad news.

Thanks for posting the video. Thats the first full match I watched in 6 years. Great stuff. I remember those guys had the best feud going. And how Tanaka would "no sell" like 4 or 5 chair shots in a row then finally go down after Awesome literally destroyed the chair over his head. haha good memories.

If you like that one you need to check out the match they had at ECW One Night Stand 05..it was as hard hitting and brutal as the match I posted.

I think we'll see more and more of these stories come out in the next few years. There's a lot of guys who did things to their bodies (extreme wrestling, riods, etc), that drastically shortened their life span, to get a spot in the 2nd boom of wrestling in the late 90s.
RIP Mike...
Side note: Classy move by WWE to induct Curt 'Mr. Perfect' Henning into the WWE HOF. That's an arguement I'd love to start, best wrestler to never hold the WWE Heavyweight Title... Mr. Perfect, or Owen?

I remember watching Mike Awesome and some of his Japanese matches and later in the ECW and he was a pretty amazing big man who got some good booking by Paul E., unfortunately there were problems with his pay check and WCW stole him just so the WWE couldn't grab him.
They then proceeded to book the poor guy right out of his career, first the stupid that 70's guy gimmick, then he evolved into the fat chick thriller. WCW proceeded to do what they did with every guy not named Hogan or Nash, and thats destroy them through the worst booking and the worst matches on the planet.
The other problem is that Mike Awesome size wise was a big man in ECW and Japan, and an average sized guy in WCW.
It sounds like the guy was out of wrestling and had been for a while, and hung himself. Not so far off from the Renegade of WCW fame who was a kind of smaller Ultimate Warrior who blew his head off after a fight with his girlfriend.

Among wrestlers who've actually wrestled in the WWF/WWE, I'd go with Ricky Steamboat but some other contenders would be Dynamite Kid, Terry Funk, and Harley Race.
Among wrestlers who've never been in the WWF/WWE, I'd go with any of the big three from All Japan's heyday: Misawa, Kobashi and Kawada.
