All the guy has going for him is his chemistry with Gaudreau, which recently has seen them post their worst numbers since their rookies seasons last year and equated to absolutely nothing come crunch time.

If Tre could con CLB into thinking hes a stud then make him world leader!
 |
Um... Yeah... no.

Monahan was a good center pre-Gaudreau and scored goals then, and arguably did more things out there.

A number of fans have actually been clamouring to split them up and some feel that Gaudreau may be holding back Monahan from playing with the puck more, and has been using Gaudreau's puck handling/playmaking as a crutch over the years when he's capable of doing those things himself, which he has shown in flashes and back when he was playing with Backlund.

It's actually entirely possible that the pairing may be holding back Monahan, not keeping him relevant.

I would just want to know who the three better centres have been.
 - Lindholm hasn't been playing centre much in Calgary so to call him a better centre seems a little presumptuous.
 - Backlund's defensive results have really taken a step back and he can't match Monahan's offense.
 - Bennett has not been good at all in the regular season.
 - Ryan has excellent analytics at both ends but that's been in a strictly secondary role.

I think you guys need to go learn what the job of center is...

 Backlund / No Contest
Lindholm / Arguably does all the traditional "centre" duties on that line all the while as Mony and Johnny fly the zone with regularity.

Bennett / Way better in his limited role as a centre last playoffs. Wasnt afraid to get his shirt dirty at both ends.

Ryan / In my opinion a way better centre.

It will be a happy day when he is jettisoned hopefully in a con job by Tre for Dubois

This was for what...one year?

Who else was getting the opportunity(that sean did) on a team that had just had multiple top picks.

The team finished in the basement that year.

If the Flames trade Ryan or Bennett for picks, their overall depth suffers a bit but they're probably still a solid team.
If the Flames trade Monahan for picks, they're likely a lottery team.

Well I hope the Flames fleece the Jackets for PLD with Monahan as the centerpiece.
And hopefully Dubois can surpass Sean the useless garbageman's 82 point career high.

Well TJ Brodie is gone now so we need a new homegrown player that isn’t perfect to undervalue on this roster, looks like Monahan is going to be that guy.
Is he great defensively? No he’s not but the coaching staff should live with that and lean into it and use him and Gaudreau in an offensive role. I think part of their decline last year was the coaching staff was trying to force a square peg into a round hole and was using them more against other teams top lines and defensive zone starts. That’s just not their game - let them be offensive.

Since Monahan joined the league in 13-14 there are 516 players listed as centres in the NHL.

In that time Monahan ranks 8th among all centres in goals with 194. That seems pretty good. And he ranks 18th in points among centres - that seems decent too.

Does he have his flaws? Sure but in the end he still produces at top end rate and people seem to just want to overlook that because it fits a certain narrative.

People on HF are offering Monny and Tkachuk... They are completely out to lunch.

Monahan and a small plus is it for me ( even hate adding the small plus).

He wants out, no reason to pay a premium.

A player doesn't rank there over that period of time just getting by as a beneficiary of chemistry with one guy.

Even McDavid can only buy a player like Kassian or Neal maybe 10 goals. And he couldn't do #### for Athanasiou. To get Sean's totals you have to be pretty damn good no matter who you are, or are paired with.

No, Monahan isn't the ideal 1C because of his playing style, but it's also apparent that his offensive ability is criminally underrated.

Yeah, that's insane.

The sweetener should be decent though I think. Like a 2nd or one of our better prospects. And you have a good point, the player wanting out doesn't put your in a position of strength. It puts you in "get the best you can" mode, and your suitors know that. So it would depend on competing offers, and whether or not someone else is willing to pay out the nose ala Montreal/Anderson.

If you’re gonna come up with that kind of a claim regarding monahan, I hope you’re ready for the pitchforks. You should probably start off on which 3 you think are better than him.

Being a lottery team is probably the best way to get an elite center.

The problem is the Flames will never win a lottery during any of our lifetimes and we all know it.

You don't need to win a lottery, although it helps.

I mean, just taking the NHL's list top 20 centers in the league:

Kopitar
Barzal
Couturier
Stamkos
Petterson
O'Reilly
Tavares
Aho
Schiefele
Barkov
Zibanejad
Point
Malkin
Bergeron
Eichel
Matthews
Crosby
Draisatl
McKinnon
McDavid

McDavid, McKinnon, Crosby, Matthews, Eichel, Malkin, Barkov, Tavares, and Stamkos could all be considered lottery wins, even if the team that picked them technically lost, but they were behind a better prospect.

Over half the list was not a lottery win. You can plug and play different players, but the Canucks lost the lottery and got Petterson. Kopitar and Barzal were drafted out of the top 10. O'Reilly, Bergeron, and Aho weren't even first round picks.

So 13 of the top 20 centers in the league were top 10 picks.
And the 7 that weren't top 10 picks are probably the worst centers on the list (I'm assuming you got the list from here ).

Seems like having a top 10 pick -but not necessarily a lottery win- is what matters.
Even Lindholm, Monahan, and Bennett were top 10 picks.

Also interesting that Point is the only center in the top 20 who wasn't drafted in the first or second round.

You realize he is the leading goal scorer of his draft year right? Ahead of Nathan Mackinnon
