Oiler propaganda ministry is mentioning Broberg in the same breath as Bobby Orr. Christmas just keeps on giving.
My favorite part is that this sets the expectations SO high that, even if he is a reasonably good player, he can never hope to hit them. Thereby ensuring creation of at least a small subset of the fan base who will always be disappointed in him vocally for not reaching potential. Lol Oil gonna oil!
Great defense there by Hall of famer Kevin Lowe! And he managed to put up between 40 points too in an era where offensive defence men regularly were a point per game!
Truly a HOF

Which current Oiler/Oiler prospect is "The Next Kevin Lowe?"
Darnell Nurse.
A slightly above-average defenseman who rides the coat-tails of better players, and who I could see being convinced of his own self-invented greatness.
He seems like a good bet to land a cushy legacy position with the Oilers that provides him with a platform from which to brag endlessly about his own pedestrian career.

I guess you'd have to factor in which current Oiler most ingratiates himself to the Katz kid. I would exclude McHobo, in that he's awkward around any of the team brass.

Remember when Kevin Lowe had an offer from the Flames (circa "Young Guns" era, I think) and turned it down so that he could go back to the Oilers because (and I'm paraphrasing here) he said that him joining the Flames would be like Lanny McDonald retiring with the Oilers...?
My God, the delusion.
(And Steve Smith was the better fit anyhow, thank you very much.)
The hilarity of the whole MT vs Kassian thing is that Kassian's game completely fell apart after the final fight against MT. He became a useless overpaid player who lost all the momentum of the early season gains that got him his massive contract.
Frankly, as much as Kassian believed that he was some kind of tough guy, he was exposed as the classless, cowardly, back jumping piece of trash that he's always been, and that MT a actually very good hockey player was willing to fight with no fear to satisfy a code that Kassian has never ever lived up to got into his head.
The media lead by the Edmonton amateur fan boy media tried to portray Kassian as an honorable hockey player, some ancient guardian of the code, but every one knows that he's a trash, gutless hockey player that likes nothing better then jumping into head shots, and attacking players from the back. When he was challenged by Rinaldo (I think) from the Flames bench after his fight with Mathew with an (I'm next). Kassian suddenly became fascinated by his skate laces and faced with the realization that he was a coward, he lost his entire effort level, and his belief in himself and is now on the way to becoming a cap anchor.

He hit Kassian right into Kassian’s next contract! That’s some check!
Kassian should be sending a couple of Keg gift certificates for helping out with the big contract.
One of the most insane peices of business the Oilers have done, and that says something.
Purely out of hubris and the league wide and country wide buzz that first game generated, Lowe goes ahead gets that contract extension done as a gleeful proof of validation of Kassains's actions.
Do you really think hockey guys like Tippett and Holland, walking the fine line day to day of a cap team, with some many more important ways to allocate those funds to try and make the team better, are going to suddenly step up mid season to vastly over pay to resign a 4th line slug? And, it had to be signed before that next Flames/Oilers game two weeks later, or it would lose most of the desired public relations effect Lowe was going for.
Kassian owes Tkachuk easily half of that new contract. The dysfunction and delusion of the organization up north was also epitomized by this move with the smartest guy in the room, once again, undermining the people who's job it is to run the team.

most organizations would have seen how caveman Kassian handled getting owned by a skill player and moved on. In Oiler land, that gets you a very nice extension. Love it.

I feel like Tkachuk and Flames fans get the last laugh though. The Oilers org will never admit it, but I have no doubt that Kassians buffonary and the subsequent glowing media coverage helped play some part to push Holland over the edge to lock Kassian up to a 4 year, $12.8 million contract.
It doesn't have the high dollar value hit of a Lucic, Eriksson, Seabrook, etc... type contract, but that is an overpayment for a team trying to turn the corner and compete.
Holland is taking the death by a thousand cuts approach to killing the Oilers. A 2nd round pick here, an extra million to a UFA contract there, and suddenly you're left with a mediocre team with limited assets and no capspace.

Just... WOW.

Every year, its not a question of when or how many. They have a blind spot to talent, and their hockey team that's fine. But I don't see any other fanbases that brag about nothing like Oiler fans do.
I think its going to be another year of no playoffs this year.
I think Draisaitl and Yamamoto are going to slip quite a bit and they're going to put Draisaitl back on McDavid's line because he's a good accompanying player but not a great player on his own line.
I think they're pp which carried them is going to slip as well. You don't have two historic seasons with mass over achievements in a row.
Good Luck Oilers, or should I say . . . goodbye.

Since their run to the finals, they've made the playoffs once in 14 years. Once. that's 1/14 . . . that's a .0714 success rate.
If I bought an NHL team, and filled the lineup with a combination of sad wet dogs with notes in their mouths and gerbils, I'd have more success with the Oilers.
Just think about that.
The Idaho BinderPilots of the youth hockey league lead by little Timmy Johnson have a better chance of making the NHL playoffs then the Oilers do.
