The iconic 23-year-old orca logo donned by Canucks players and fans has come under fire as an example of cultural appropriation and the continuation of colonialism.

University of Manitoba Indigenous studies and history professor, Sean Carleton, says the team should scrap the logo, entirely, out of respect.

“How can you continue to develop meaningful relations with Coast Salish nations when you continue to profit from branding that is appropriating their art style?” he asks on Twitter.

The orca logo was created in 1997 and features elements of Haida design.
Can we bring back the V and be done with it?

That's ridiculous.

The Canucks orca isn't disrespectful in any way.

But fine. Let's remove all references to native peoples from pop culture, no matter how respectful, and they can be ignored utterly. Is that better?

It would be up to west coast aboriginals whether or not using Salish inspired artwork is offensive. I don't recall any uproar about it before and the Salish have a pretty strong presence in the Vancouver area.

At some point, isn't it good to have aspects of a culture become part of the mainstream? I mean, it kind of suggests that your art has universal appeal, which is not a bad thing.

Redesign it with the help of First Nations, then donate part of the proceeds from jersey sales to the First Nations?
Or leave it, because it’s not offensive or meant to be in any way

Seems like people disregard things on the basis of whether they are or are not claimed to be offensive. Perhaps a closer read is in order?

No where is the "offensiveness" of the Orca logo mentioned. What IS mentioned, is that it was appropriation, not created with anyone with connection to people, no one consulted with, no cent of profit given, etc. The idea is not that it is "offensive" but that it's hard to say you respect a nation when you use and profit from their imagery without so much as a conversation or any sort of consult during its creation.

It's not that it's offensive, it's not that it's insulting, it's that even if it was created out of respect for the people responsible for that imagery, little to none of that respect was actually shown in the creation of the logo or the many following years. "We respect you, so we will hire a white person to make art that pays that respect to you, and... that's it." Seems a bit silly, right?

It's funny, if you look at Sean's twitter, his position boils down to "The logo is appropriated Indigenous imagery without any real effort put forth to show respect to that nation, they should work with local nations and have done some work in that respect, and scrap the logo because I like the stick logo better anyway."

Some of the reactions to it (most outside of here) are more outraged than the initial position, with the only actual offence present being that of people who are offended that Sean would even start the conversation.

Can anyone honestly say the logo wouldn't look better if they hired an Indigenous artist with actual connections to that style of art and that imagery, who understands the history, and had them re-do it? You can't go backwards, but that seems like a cool way forwards.

Should be up to the Coast Salish people, but I don't think he's out to lunch.

I also think that, if you believe that the only other options besides having Indigenous-inspired art created by white people is a complete erasure of Indigenous people in pop culture, maybe you've accidentally stumbled onto a bigger problem.

Nope, we should be properly differentiating and calling them by the proper names of Anhui, Fujian, Hunan, Jiangsu, Shangdong, Zhejiang, Sichaun and Cantonese cuisines.

So Bill Reid was a well know Northwest Coast Indigenous artist but he's white. What's the rules here?

I agree with everything you have written here, but it is important to point out from an article posted in the other thread that the Salish Nation has in fact given their endorsement of the Canucks orca logo.

According to his bio, his mother was from the Haida first nation and he learned the art style from his maternal grandfather: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Reid
