If Ryan is indeed immovable, then we could potentially still fit him by moving Hanifin for Futures (would have to still be something nice...) and then either hoping mackey-valimaki fills the void or signing Kylington ~1 mil and having ~3.8 to play with for granlund.

Okay, how on earth is Mikael Granlund still available?
28 year old middle-6 centre with decent possession numbers.
What am I missing?

They can go over during the break, and then do something. No one is getting him for a second round pick.

Victim of the cap freeze. Probably wants more money than anyone can/is willing to give him and is holding out hoping something shakes free rather than accepting lowballs. He had pretty mediocre numbers in Nashville and that is also likely affecting his perceived value. The guy was probably thinking longterm 5-6 mil before the current situation and his poor last year. Hard to justify vs what he is likely to get this year.

Same reason as Hoffman. Granlund's underlying numbers with Nashville were really poor so I imagine he's getting a lot in the way of short term contract offers as it's hard to tell if he's in a major decline or that the Predators were a bad fit.

Granlund's ability to play center effectively at the NHL level is also in question. If he could have done it Minny, he probably wouldn't have been traded.

on a positive note, if we were to snag him it is almost certainly to play wing.
Gaudreau-Monahan-Granlund could be a pretty interesting line IMO.

Take a one year show- me deal then.
Last thing you want in a situation like this is to be left without a chair when the music stops.
Though I don’t think Granlund does much to add jam to our top 6 - rather leave Mangiapane there in that case.
But Granlund certainly has skill. There’s no Denying that.

Except they don’t want to go over because the minute they do they have little to no leverage when trading away cap space. They already don’t, but it would become a pressing situation if they went over the cap and no one did them a solid. Who’s going to want to help the Stanley Cup winners with their cap issues? The answer is not really anyone. Their former GM didn’t even claim a player he knows, a player he could’ve gotten for free if he just claimed him. Cap space is the new currency, and the Lightning are on their last dollar.

The Lightning have a plethora of options they can leverage if they get put in a corner. This is part of having a great team with talent throughout the lineup. They can move a player if they need to, and it will create a feeding frenzy if any of their players hit the market. You're not going to get a great young player for a song. They will give up a futures asset to move one of their older players instead of moving a great young player, and there will be teams willing to help them out.

He is far more effective on the wing.
He has been his most effective as a RW in his career.
Would really like him on the team, good solid playmaker with great vision and is solid defensively.

And the $2-4 mil class of NHL players is getting absolutely crushed in this flat cap environment. It’s an acceleration of the trend where the NHLPA middle class is getting squeezed out.

@greenlantern - Grandlund will absolutely not be left without a chair when the music stops. That's just poor fan analysis that is fanning speculation that players like Grandlund and Hoffman need to take whatever deals they can get now to make sure they're on a team.
That is fantasy, these players are in a bad situation and they're rightfully waiting things out because they WILL be on a team when the season starts.

When you have a lot of players teams want and need, there will be better options than letting a very good player go for a 2nd round pick.

I think a lot of the names on the UFA list are still waiting for capped out teams to sort things out. Like Tampa has to unload pieces that may be more attractive than any of the UFAs.
