It still makes a bit of sense if the team is looking to free up cap space. Not saying I'm down for a one for one Hanafin for Carlo as I think the Bruins would have to add.

Hanifin for Carlo is fairly close but of course everyone has to include Gaudreau in every trade discussion and then act like it’s a good idea when we get the s#@% end of the stick.
I don’t know why I jump in this thread really.
Terrible Gaudreau or Monahan proposals ever time I stop by.

The funny thing is that Gaudreau fans are advocating Monahan trades and vice versa. Like it's gonna save their guy or something.

How could you possibly know who likes who more lol?
I like Monahan fine, I just think he is lacking as a 1C. Doesn't mean I don't like him. I like the Calgary Flames. I want them to succeed. That probably means Monahan needs to leave or get better. It is what it is. Doesn't mean I don't like Monahan.

I see this thread has gone full circle for the thousandth time.
Back to trading Monahan because you can't win when your best center is the teams best center. Let's make the hole bigger!!!

Yeah I agree, think we would need to add something pretty. That being said, Boston gets almost as productive and much younger player, and could no doubt retain him past this contract. Depending on their view they might see Johnny as a better long term fit with Pasta.
Hanifin is a bit more valuable than Carlo imo too. I don't think it's that far off value wise, but Marchand being the heart of the bruins team complicates it and probably requires an addition on our end.

I have been thinking about the centre ice position. If the Flames move Lindholm to center that really makes it tough to keep Bennett at C considering Backlund, and Monahan would slot in front of him making him 4th line at best.
Would Bennett be a fit in a Hanifin for Debrusk+Carlo swap? Or are we still in love with Bennett?

Bennett has 63 goals in 5 full NHL seasons.
Debrusk has 62 goals in 3 NHL Seasons.
We should absolutely do this trade if it's possible.

If the plan is to run the top 3 C’s as Lindholm, Monahan, Backlund I agree I think it makes sense. Debrusk brings some of the bite that would be going out the door with Bennett.
Tkachuk-Lindholm-Mangipane
Gaudreau-Monahan-Debrusk
Dube-Backlund-Leivo
Lucic-Ryan-Simon/Nordstrom
Giordano-Andersson
Valimaki-Carlo
Kylington-Tanev
Mackey/Nesterov
Markstrom
Rittich

Might as well sign Perry on league minimum too, run with the biggest group of super-pest players ever seen in the post-lockout era lol.

That’s the problem.
If you’re moving Lindholm to center, then you’re either going to need to trade Monahan/Bennett or move Bennett back to wing. But, we all know that Bennett deserves a fair shot as a center.
Hence why I think Monahan is out the door. I don’t see Monahan becoming a winger and I think management would be wise to keep Bennett with Lucic and Dube. That line has everything.
There is always that alternative of trying Bennett at RW and switch draws with Lindholm (a Gaudreau - Lindholm - Bennett looks really good on paper) but I remember reading/hearing somewhere (correct me if wrong) that Lindholm doesn’t like to frequently switch positions. He wants something consistent. So, if we are truly wanting him at C then he needs to remain as a C for the whole season.
This is probably the perfect season for trial and error. Trying Lindholm at C, Andersson and Hanifin on the top pairing, maybe Valimaki as a RD, etc. The 20/21 season is going to be a weird one.

Why Monahan. Backlund makes more sense to trade. Especially if you're moving Lindholm to center. Monny is still and will be the teams best center even with all the swapping. Lindholms my favorite Flame. By a long shot but he's still not a better center than Monahan.
Backlund is great, has been a rock for the Flames for so long. But he's on the wrong side of young and his cap space can be better used. If the argument is "but defense and 200ft game", then Lindholm is the answer to that.
Its as lateral a move as you'll ever see IMO, moving Backlund and filling his spot with Lindholm. But still leaves the Flames without a top line RHS RW.
Also, DeBrusk? Why another left winger? We don't have enough of those either?

Because Monahan really doesn’t look the same. I’m willing to give him the benefit of the doubt, but if Treliving asked me which player would I rather have between Monahan and Gaudreau, I’d tell him Gaudreau. Not only that, Monahan gives us a better chance of getting a better return. If we do retain both (which is pretty likely), him and Gaudreau need to be split up. I think teams have them figured out because any film from Calgary has those two paired up. Shut down one you shut down the other (as of right now).
I know Backlund is your ideal guy to move, I just don’t see him getting traded.

I'm with you. Backlund is the guy this team should look at moving to get his money off the books as you can slot Lindholm in his place. I like Backlund but he will be 32 during the next season so I don't understand why you would look at moving 26 year old Monahan ahead of him as Monahan has considerably more upside going forward compared to a declining 30 year old.

I think Lindholm can provide what Backlund does with more scoring punch so I agree.
How many high end years does Backlund have an a shutdown center?
Gaudreau-Monahan-New RW
Tkachuk-Lindholm-Mangiapane
Dube-Bennett-Leivo
I don’t think the organization would do it though. They are more loyal than asset management savvy with certain players.

This team isnt ready to be Backlund free. The guy borderline has a career year and everbody is writing him off? This is the guy tasked with shutting down the likes of Mcdavid and McKinnon. I for one would much prefer to package up Lucic with players/picks (like someone we could loose in the expansion anyways) instead of getting rid of a useful player like Backlund. Plus I feel hes a vital part of the whole team sweden thing we have going on right now.
A 5.35m shutdown 2/3C isnt as bad as a 5.25 4LW

I'm sure every Flames fan on earth would rather trade Lucic than Backlund but that's likely not realistic.

We don't actually need to trade anyone. If lindholm plays centre Bennett doesn't. It's pretty simple.
Personally I would prefer to keep lindy on the wing, where he has played great.
Tkachuk-Bennett-Lindholm
Gaudreau-monahan-leivo
Mangiapane-backlund-dube
Lucic-ryan-simon/nordstrom
I have wanted that top line to be tried for so long.
