It is frustratingly hilarious that every single console launch has had so many issues with shortages and pre orders dating back to the PS2 (maybe earlier).
I remember pre-ordering my PS2 after saving all summer to find out a week before EBgames was not going to honor my pre-order because Sony had some kind of shortage and only people who paid for their systems in full got their pre-order. I recall being so angry as i was 5th on the list and would have paid out the balance if they called me to advise me before. I was fortunate that I was able to park outside the Canadian Tire on launch day about 40 minutes before they opened and got one of the consoles.
I was fortunate to get a PS3 from my girlfriend at the time for Christmas during the launch year. She had an in at Best Buy and was able to get one.
PS4 I lucked out and was able to get one shortly after launch at Best Buy by sheer luck of just calling them on a day they happened to receive a new shipment. The sales guy told me he would hold one if I bought a warranty and since my PS3 had fried 8 months earlier I took him up on the offer (that PS4 is still going strong so pure waste of money).
PS5 seems to be a similar gong show. I have tried a few times to get a pre-order. I mentioned earlier in the thread I woke up at 2AM to try for the Superstore preorder that started at 3AM about a month ago. Now based on what I am reading online it doesn’t look like anyone is getting their system tomorrow and likely early next week is the best people can hope for. I know I am going to try all the retailers I can tomorrow and just hope to secure one before Christmas as I will have a couple weeks off at the end of the year and winter is definitely gaming season for me.
Maybe it is to build suspense or maybe it is just the capacity they have to build these things but every console generation is never able to meet the demand. Covid seems to make this year even worse but I am actually glad I don’t even have the option of lining up somewhere tonight to try and get a PlayStation in store.
I definitely feel for the folks in here who were on the ball and got their preorder but now sit in limbo waiting to find out when they get their system. Hopefully many of you are pleasantly surprised in the next couple of days and it arrives.
I can’t wait to play the Spider-Man sequel as the original was one of my favorite games on the PS4 and one of my favorite games of all time.
I think I’m done pre-ordering consoles and I’ll just try my luck on launch day from now on.
I pre-ordered my PS5 in September and it just shipped last night. I ordered my Xbox on launch day and it was here 24 hours later from Amazon.

Just got a note from Amazon saying delivery of 13th to the 16th. I have priority shipping but not sure if it makes a difference. If you chat with an Amazon rep and ask them to waive the fee they seem to be open to it.
One less thing to worry about. I cancelled my pre-order of the Spiderman game. I might venture out tomorrow and get that + Demon Souls (and regret that decision).
At some point at lunch today I got the “Xbox on the truck” note and it arrived a few hours later. This is my 3rd launch day Microsoft store console purchase and the first one that was late...although by a day. Not bad.
Setup was quick and easy and I’m looking forward to getting some time with it tomorrow.
I’m going to switch my Xbox live gold to game pass ultimate which is the real money maker for Microsoft tomorrow, so looking forward to seeing how far my $1 conversion goes.

Load up 36 months with live and then pay the $1. It will automatically make that $1 for the full period of ultimate.

I don't have anything firm but it's my belief that Sony isn't producing next gen consoles as fast as Microsoft as I read in another forum that a guy that works logistics says that there was 2x more pre-order inventory in Canada for Xbox than PS5.
Thought I had a PS5 from toysRus had it in the cart and everything but got an out of stock notice as I was trying to pay. Shoppers also a no go
Your best bet will be best buy or Amazon this morning IMO.
Best Buy will likely have about 5000 units if it's similar to the Series X, and based on current trends you'll probably receive it before those of us who pre-ordered in September.

For Pre-Orders on Best Buy I think PS5 actually had slightly more stock.
And IIRC even though both systems were sold out at the time the PS5 was slightly higher than the Series X on the Amazon best seller list.
It still might be true though, because Microsoft has a much bigger and elaborate direct to customer model in Canada than Sony does. So Microsoft might have had more units, but just were selling them through their own online store.
E-mail I got from Best Buy today. I don't really get their rationale here as sending at 8pm the night before release day seems like they waited too late to process.
