Before this years Bubble playoffs the last time Tanev was in the playoffs was 2014-15.

You may remember this series that Ferland, Jones, Stajan, Colbourne, 18 year old Bennett and Engelland physically dominated the Canucks.

Peak Tanev (age 25) had 3 hits in that 6 games series.

Meh, rather than complain about what might happen, I'm going to take a wait and see approach with this signing. It might be bad, it might not be. Lets see how Tanev does first before we bring out the pitchforks.

I remember Tanev's play in that series pretty well. He and Edler completely suffocated Gaudreau-Monahan-Hudler for almost the entire series. If we get that version of Tanev we're set.

Sarich absolutely crushes him but, hats off to Marleau he took that hit like a tough SOB.

Yeah, Andersson pretty much is taking Brodies spot, Tanev take Hammers. Honestly, at the rate Hammer got hurt during his tenure happens to Tanev, for trade off I suppose. Although I suspect he will get hurt less and miss less time.

I have always respected the hell out of Marleau after that. As much as that hit gave the Flames momentum that night, I suspect his toughness inspired the Sharks. In a corny way I have always considered that a pretty good life lesson.

That makes sense and a good way to look at it. What they need now is depth especially considering Tanev and Valimaki’s injury history.

This is also something I have been wondering about since the signing. The Flames have been remarkably injury free for the past couple seasons, and while that seems on the face of it like good fortune, I wonder if there isn't also something in their training protocols that contributes to this, and perhaps this bodes well for Tanev. On the flip side there are other teams who seem to struggle immensely with injuries. It feels like everyone in Montreal is always injured.

Tanev doesn’t seem like a big hitter based on the shifts that I saw. He actually looked more like a finesse guy akin to TJ Brodie as weird as that sounds.

The way I say him defend, he was more interested in fronting the puck carrier and using his stick to separate the puck from the player. He’d push and shove the players to throw them off balance and make it difficult to make plays, but it’s not like he went out of his way to hit them and take himself out of position.

I actually like the way he defends more than the Sarich and Warrener types. He’s fast, so he’ll be able to keep up against quicker players and hopefully won’t be beat one-on-one very often.

The few question marks I have left for him is his puck retrievals. I’m not sure his edge work is the at the same level as TJ Brodie, so he might have a tough time against forecheckers and he might end up absorbing a lot of hits which could be why he’s injured so often. It could lead to some turnovers as well which will probably lead to shot blocks which again, injuries. I’m hoping he gets paired up with Gio who can make the little plays to get the puck out of the zone and keep Tanev from absorbing hits/shot blocks which hopefully means he spends less time in the press box.

In fairness I have not really watched this player and the reviews on him are really a mixed bag. I think with the Flames losing 3 of 6 defencemen to FA, Tre felt he had to act quickly. Certainly like a lot other teams He passed on Barrie and there really was no other option.

The issue with Brodie is I am sure that Brodie did not want to end up with Seattle and Calgary could not protect him. I am sure he wanted the NMC and got that with Toronto.

Some defenders try to time their arrival to a puck on a dump-in so that they arrive at the same time as the opposing forward, essentially slowing down, and avoiding a hit - but also making the puck retrieval a toss-up.

Tanev doesn't do this - he tends to get there first, and get the puck to safety, but often has to take a hit. Makes for better defense and possession - but you're right, he has been injured from playing that way.
