Fair points blaster and I was going to mention Pettersen and Hughes because they are stellar picks but Benning really missed on Juolevi and Virtanen which hurt their progression in my opinion. Don’t take me wrong either eh I do and have enjoyed you on this forum and different fans make CP what it is and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

^^^ I’m in the same boat.

Brad had the chance to acquire Holtby, Markström or Murray.

Any one of them would have been an acceptable course of action.

“None” was not.

Virtanen was an ownership pick. Juolevi would not look anywhere near as bad if he hadn't spent the last two and a half seasons on IR. He'll likely never have the impact that Tkachuk has but, I am pretty confident he can come in this season and help stabilize our D a bit since he is a much better puck mover than both Stecher and Fantenberg.

Holtby is going to get lit up...that D lol

Where are your smug Markstrom is going to the AVS and Calgary is stuck with Rittich comments now?
I don't think Holtby is going to get lit up. I don't think any Canucks goalie is going to get lit up while Ian Clarke is there.

Markstrom's career was pretty much done when he got to Vancouver and Clarke turned him into one of the best.

There's less work to get Holtby back to where he was. Probably just some tweeks and adjustments.

Markström was a blue chip goalie prospect who was the centrepiece of the Luongo trade.

He wasn’t ready until he was 25, like most goalies.

His career wasn’t “pretty much done”, it was “pretty much going as expected”, if a little slower than hoped.

Markstrom wasn't a "centerpiece". It was a trade we were forced to make, much like the OEL deal was going to be. We were given two teams and had to make it work. We needed a goalie to come back to make the trade work.

Markstrom cleared waivers prior to getting the right coach to re-build him. Don't get it twisted, his career wasn't 'done' but it wasn't far from it.

I haven’t followed this much. Do you know why he was insisting on Edmonton or Calgary only? Seems odd.

I wonder if that’s ever happened before in the history of both teams lol

Another aspect of the Markstrom & Tanev duo is their familiarity with the Western Conference, they both know all about shutting down the best snipers that our rivals have to offer.

I think he just likes Western Canada and didn't want to leave.

I'm not buying into the legend of Ian Clarke, but I understand why Canucks fans would cling to it. Holtby is a good pickup and I'm sure he'll do fine, but it won't be because Ian Clarke tore him down and built him back up.

Ya Markstrom was always very highly touted but like any goalie prospect there was element of boom bust to him

Didn’t Van waive him after the trade? Doesn’t sound like a centerpiece if that’s the case but definitely another lesson as to why you never give up on a high ceiling goalie

We have a #1 goalie. Thats all we should care about. We should be happy AF we don't have to ride Rittich and an old guy again.

Its about darned time we can turn the lights off on the goalie debate auditorium and worry about what else the team needs.

Feels good man.

Rittich with all the pressure off him now probably has a better season too in his contract year

He’s played his best as a backup/1B. Condensed schedule we will need him to win games

Luongo
Steven Anthony

For

Markström
Shawn Matthias

It’s hardly a great trade, and it’s not as though the Canucks dealt from a position of strength.

But if the centre piece isn’t Markström, it was Matthias, and I don’t think a bottom six winger was the prize.

Markstrom was the one who might turn into something.

And he did!

Don’t you love it when a plan comes together?

As someone with a jersey buying problem, I must ask: Has it been confirmed that Markstrom is #25? The website says that's the case.

I think we’re gonna love this guy. Was watching open mic playoff highlights and seemed he was always smiling, kibbitzing with the refs and there was one where Horvat scored in OT and he was yelling “woo baby I love overtime!!”

This conversation interested me so I went and looked at when most goalies (that I can recall) became starters in the NHL. Most were 25-26 years old and usually had a good 10-12 years of play. The few exceptions that were younger were really big stars, Roy/Brodeur/Fuhr/Vernon but were few and far between.

What surprised me were even the great ones had a save percentage for their careers of around .910 but it was directly related to early career numbers that were really low. I think this was a good pick up for the Flames, much better than MIKE SMITH in Edmonton

It's not official, but it is very likely; he wore 25 for Vancouver and Florida, he also wears it internationally. He did however wear 35 in San Antonio & 33 in Utica.

Ah this signing is so awesome. We have top tier goaltending again! It’s been so, so long. So many nights we’ve had to say “can’t blame that one on the goalie”, when really - we could. This is awesome.
