I think he earned his money since being signed, I just think now it’s money better spent elsewhere going forward.

But this contract is atrocious. I'll cheer hard for this team, but this iteration of the Flames isn't winning anything.
The Flames either need to move on from BT or fire every single professional scout in the organization. I don't know who's to blame here. Both.

Let me simplify.
3+ million on he 4th line is bad.
I don't give a #### if the found money was placed in the band of my boxers by Kerry Washington, on the 4th line it is a bad contract
good signings can turn into bad contracts, just look at Frolik.

I think you should at least wait until the offseason is done and the team plays a few games...Tanev was Vancouver's best dman in the playoffs according to a lot of talking heads

The contract was just one year too long. Such as life in free agency.
But you’re right. He’s expendable for the role he’ll play moving forward.

That is not really fair, he is learning albeit slowly. I think at the end of the Taney contract he will probably pass on giving out more of these type of contracts.

Canucks fans talking like he is a solid 2-3 Dman. Reading some of those comments are making me feel good and there is always a chance if he has a great year 1 in Calgary that Seattle will grab him in the expansion draft so this is like a one year rental?

Second, Tanev is no Regehr defensively, and Regehr played in a pretty different era. These days, d-men need to bring offense.

In fairness Tre did need to do something. We just lost 4 dmen.

I find the upset over this signing is way over the top. I think it's a decent signing although I would have preferred to keep Brodie. Tre has had a good day. We are far more solid defensively than when the day began. Still some work to do with the forward corps. I think beyond adding pieces, that group still needs to be shaken up. Expecting some trades rather than more signings.

An ok signing, not great. Hopefully the downgrade offensively will balance out with better defense compared to Brodie.

He couldn't learn with Brouwer, Neal, Stone? This is the contract that learns him?

Not on the 4th line it isn't, and that's the point. Flames need to trim some fat off the lineup, unless Lucic is going to be moved.

If the Flames are going to sign Hall, I expect Gaudreau to be traded. Obviously they can't afford it otherwise, but it wouldn't make sense to go into a season with three first line LWers
It's either going to be Hall + whatever assets we can get for Gaudreau (most likely picks/prospects or players on ELC to stay under cap) or stick with Gaudreau for another season IMO

I don't think he'll be giving out any types of contracts by then. At least not here.

I wish we saw more two- or three-year contracts handed out by this management group. Maybe that's an unrealistic ask given Calgary's stature as a market. That fourth year just always seems to be a killer, though. Hope it's not the case here.
I like the Markstrom contract (a lot!) but this one just confuses me.

You dont seem to understand that a player has a say in the contract he signs as well... UFAs arent lining up for 2 or 3 year deals

There is one year too many on this deal, and I think it's about half a million too much. When you are a team like the Flames that can have a tougher time getting good players to come here, I get why they end up doling out these deals. But it's a definite downgrade on Brodie. In a way it does seem like Treliving trying to replace Hamonic with another guy who also has a few hard miles on him too.

So you may be right, but it's hard to tell. Just look what guys like Cole and Zadorov did to our team. Especially the top line. Regher used to do that to others. Good defense is important.
Tanev is no Reggie. But the Flames need a good defensive guy, a guy that blocks shots and goes all out every shift. Tanev is pretty good at that
|
Well, I have been saying that our defense isn't good enough, and I'm not against signing Tanev as such. I don't hate the signing.
Buuuut...
Four years is IMO a lot of years for a guy for whom playing ALMOST 70 games is an achievement worth noting, and who while fine isn't what you'd call a difference maker. Not crazy about the cap hit either.
