I like it. A solid defensive defenseman is a good addition.

Seems odd to be freaking out over it...especially since Brodie is gone either way

This is going to give some major flexibility with top 4 pairings. Gio - Tanev may be as good as Gio - Andersson, and if so it lets Andersson continue to develop in a minor sheltered role.

Tanev, Savard, and P. Meyers were my pipe dream for #4 replacements. And the Flames didn't have to give anything up other than cash to do it.

Win.

FWIW this morning the TSN panel thought Tanev would be a great acquisition by CGY.

How is Tanev on special teams? I’m assuming he’ll see regular PK rotation?
With Valimaki hopefully elevating into the top 4 sooner rather than later, this seems like a decent veteran add. Likely a better fit than Forbort and Gustaffson anyways.

I've always liked Tanev. Really good in his own end, doesn't put up offensive numbers but also doesn't just chip it off the glass. He can get it out of his own zone quite well. Huge high character guy too that will add leadership to a team badly in need of it and hold his teammates accountable. He's like Gio without the offense.
I approve. A little pricey, but important signing.

I don't like this signing because the Flames really needed a PP quarterback in this Brodie replacement (and they didn't get it). Hopefully Andersson can grow into that player ASAP.

People are really assuming that Brodie would have signed in Calgary for the TO offer, which may not be true.Sounds like he was ready to go and went there for less than he would have stayed for.

That left us with a big hole and Tanev fills it. Not in love with this signing, but I understand it.

Would much rather give this deal to tanev rather than barrie. At least Tanev can play defense

Very good. A defensive defensman is exactly what this team needed. Hamonic wasn't quite that, and they haven't really felt that presence since Englland. This allows for my preferred alignment :
Hanafin - Andersson (solid second pairing last year/time to take kids gloves off)
Giordano - Kylington (move to the right, and Gio teaches him to be Brodie!)
Valimaki - Tanev (great support and teacher)
 Petrovic (popcorn!)

Mackie - Yelesin (lots of minutes in Stockton)

but I'll understand going with Gio-Tanev and limiting the third pairings minutes.

Interesting signing -- I haven't watched the Canucks lately so I don't know how well he plays.
With Brodie gone, BT had to sign another dman. Barrie and Pietrangelo probably weren't happening, so I guess this is a maybe good choice.

Price might be a little too high, but that's what happens when you pay UFAs.

Much prefer Tanev, someone who prioritizes D, over Barrie. Team needs to get harder to play against and this helps that a lot.

I'd love to see these pairings:
 Hanifin-Andersson
 Gio-Kylington
 Valimaki-Tanev
