Barrie doesn't play defense. Tanev doesn't play a physical game. The only defenseman left on the UFA board worth what he is going to get paid is AP.

Seems unlikely, but since he has struggled in 2 of his 3 years with the Flames; I imagine he'd fall in under what Gudas got (3x2.5)

Flames wouldn’t look at Hamonic unless he was a 3rd pairing guy and paid accordingly.

How is a near 50 point defenseman not worth 5 million? Even 1 dimensional 50 point forwards get 5 million.

Barrie is interesting, he has quickly been dumped by two teams in the last two years, and seems like every teams third or fourth choice. He is not competitive, that’s what everyone is looking for. Too much Galyenchuk in him.

This speaks volumes, this is why I post what I believe is going on with the players and the Flames.

Hanifin & Bennett know that Calgary wanted to deal them to Jersey too...

It's not that I want them gone but I see the Flames wanted them gone.

That is a big difference between the types of CP posters, I find a lot of people here usually post only what they personally want to see happen with their team.

Flames have 10M left with current lines as follows:
Gaudreau-Monahan-Lindholm
Chucky-Backlund-Mang
Lucic-Bennett-Dube
Xxzz-Ryan-xxxx

Gio-Andersson
Hanifin- xxxxx
Valimaki- Kyllington
+ 2 extras

Assume Mang costs 3M, the 2 extras are league min and our 4th line wings are league min.

That leaves 10M - 6M = 4M for a RD.

Alternate option 1:
Sign Hall (+8M)
Trade Johnny for a 2.75M young top 4. If you find a way to dump Ryan, you can sign a 1M center and get a 4.75M young RD coming back.

Alternate option 2:
Sign Pietrangelo (+8M)
Trade Johnny and Ryan for 2 young Wingers

Alternate option 3:
Sign vaatanen or similar for 4M.

Option 4:
Sign toffoli or similar 4M and move one of our forwards for a 4D

Alternative 5:
Johnny + Picks for a package that bring back a top 6 winger or two and a top 4D for a combined cost of less than 10M coming back.

Options 1,2&5 are the only ones that move the needle on changing the team from continuing to be middle of the road.

Yeah I'm not really high on him either. I think he will be overpaid and I hope it's not by us. For who's left Tanev at a good contract is something I like. Not sexy but solid D who will improve the team.

Because a 60 point defenseman in Gus is not worth 3m

I cant see Johnnys motivation being to high if he has to play for the Flames after a summer/ fall full of his name being "shopped"
