Yeah, when I was making my post I counted him as a first liner.

Really love this. Was getting Mankowski vibes and really dreading another gm trying to be clever and go of the board. Instead, it was a gm reading the board masterfully and predicting the other teams' picks.

Treliving has pretty much stuck to standard picks in the past.

If Jankowski ever becomes what Feaster sold him as, Mankowski has to be his new name.

Also there was more than a full rounds worth of players to record at least 1000 PIMs, including Tim & Dale Hunter who recorder over 6700 PIMs combined.

The 1979 draft only consisted of 126 picks, only 23 never played an NHL game.
I definitely think 79 is the deeper draft (as a double cohort, and coming at at time of expansion gave these guys opportunities to play) but should not shake a stick at 2003- I believe they are already at 14 1000 gamers and a few others are close. no they won't reach the scoring peaks, but at least some of that is different eras at play. hell 2003 was so deep Gio wasn't even drafted

Draft day is the best time for me as hockey fan. I so excited for the young players. Just happy that Zary is excited to become Flames. I like listen and watch their interviews. Welcome to Calgary Zary!!!

So pumped about this guy.

Genuinely didn't think he'd reach the Flames at 19, let alone down at 24.

This is not true, Scott Parker was drafted in the third round in 1996, two years later he was drafted in the first round.

We wrote a whole ton of prospect pieces at FlamesNation in advance of the draft. As soon as our sign-ups were posted, I immediately picked Connor Zary's as one I wanted to write. It was the first one I completed and put up on the site.

He's been my favourite target all along. I thought guys like Perreault, Bourque and maybe Lapierre and Schneider made more sense in terms of availability, but Zary was the dream if he dropped.

Stoked AF.

Weird, but ok.

Button says: "He's a swiss army knife and is really able to play in so many different situations in the game. He can play centre ice, he can play the wing, he can be offensive, he can be defensive, he can be a catalyst for forechecking, and coaches love the versatility of players like that. 3 years I've watched him play, and every single time I went to watch him the next time he was better than the previous time. His game kept expanding, his game kept getting better and better. He reminds me a lot of Calgary Flames player Elias Lindholm, who has those same types of qualities; plays on the wing or in the center of the ice, plays on the PP and shorthanded. Really a terrific young player."
Give me a team full of Elias’ and I’ll take my chances

I'm looking through the scouting reports of Horvat from the regular draft sites, Connor sounds like a carbon copy of Bo, leadership qualities, (Zary wears a letter) most complete two way player etc...

Bo Horvat was projected to be similar to Ryan Kesler.

Bo Horvat had a safe projection as a defensively responsible second line center.

Bo Horvat was ranked right around where Zary was but this is a deeper draft.

Bo Horvat (they thought) may not be a big point producer at the highest level, since his defensive ability is even better.

Career Projection - He has the upside to be a top-line center but the safe projection is probably an above average second line center.

Long-term he projects as an ideal third-line center in the NHL. Horvat could find himself on a team’s top six -- as the sandpaper on an offensively-gifted line.

I have said the same.

I'll take 12 swiss army dreamboats against any team.

One thing I was happy to hear was Button saying that the Flames had plenty of looks at Zary and he is a player they have been keeping tabs on since he entered the CHL. This is not a pick that they made blindly.

Cozens and Dach both went top 10 last year and Zary has better draft year production than both of them in their draft year.

Cozens and Zary had very similar numbers this past season actually with Cozens in his D+1.

This draft is just that deep this year.
