Overall I'd say Frolik was a good one too. Although he fell off at the end.

James Neal is definitely the worst one, right?

Probably my favorite free agent signing the Flames ever made. Totally out of nowhere.
Hamrlik was 3.5 per year for 2 years. Back in the day where the best place for Free Agent signings was the NHLPA website as it was usually the first place that got updated. I seem to remember Sutter saying he could have got him for 4 at that figure, but as the cap jumped up a lot the next two years Hamrlik ended up getting 5.5 in Montreal.

He was a really good signing though and was a good partner for Dion Phaneuf those first two seasons.

When the Flames acquired Roman Horak in the Tom trade...at first I thought it was Hamrlik and I think it was about the same time they had signed Wideman and I was thinking how are they going to fit these guys under cap.

Martin Gelinas was another guy who was a good UFA pick up. Not a top guy, but in the pre lockout NHL that was as good as the Flames could get. I think his wife was from Calgary so that was why he signed for a decent price with what was a bad team at the time.

Frolik was hitting a single at best considering what his cap hit was. Hudler was knocking it out of the park.

Until the final year, Frolik lived up to his contract. The other poster also never compared the two signings, just said Frolik was a good one, which it was.

If we're using baseball metaphors:

- I'd say Frolik hit a double.
- Hudler hit a stand-up triple.
- Versteeg hit a bloop single and advanced to second on a fielding error by the Oilers.
- Engelland hit an infield single and barely beat the throw to first on a rough slide.
- Neal struck out looking at a 65 mph slider that the pitcher lost control of and put right down the middle.
- Brouwer hit a sac fly that got a runner to third, just in time for Neal to come up to the plate.
- Raymond hit a sac fly that got a runner to second, just in time for Brouwer to come up to the plate.
- Hiller hit a line drive to deep right-centre but got easily gunned out trying to advance to second.
- Derek Ryan was a leadoff batter who sliced one right down the line past the third baseman but ultimately got stranded on third.
- Austin Czarnik struck out but took a pitch that allowed Ryan to advance.

A lot of people want to be close to their parents when they’re raising kids. And vice-versa. The support, the babysitting, having the kids grow up with their grandparents and aunts and uncles. I know a lot of couples who once they started a family either moved back to their home city, or their parents moved across the country to be with them.

The Pietrangelos are currently living in the same community as her parents. If they move to Toronto, they’ll be living in the same community as his parents.

Frolik was a solid player for this team but as a deal it was just ok. He consumed four million in cap space which is nothing to sneeze at. I certainly don't consider that a good deal, maybe a fair one but that's it.

Naw Neal hit a fly ball to shallow centre, which was dropped, but Neal still got thrown on at first because he couldn’t be bothered to run it out.
Then he killed a puppy

Hudler definitely had the best UFA season in recent memory.

Hell of a year from him that helped to give the team success. Hard not to be grateful for what he brought for that price tag. And was a good mentor as a pure skill guy that carved out a nice career in the league and had played on successful teams.

Wideman was basically a UFA since the Flames traded a 5th for his rights.
One of the biggest signings in the post-Sutter era.

Similar to Frolik and Hiller, he was fine and then had a stinker at the end.

For the baseball record, a player only gets credit for a sacrifice fly when he scores the runner from third. Other flies that advances runners are just considered an out.

Lebrun on The Athletic regarding trading for Pietrangelo’s rights:

Quote:
The Calgary Flames have talked about the possibility internally. After all, two of their right-side blueliners T.J. Brodie and Travis Hamonic are pending UFAs. But the Flames are juggling a few things, including needing to figure out their goaltending and perhaps adding a winger up front. So, there’s lots going on there in Calgary, but at the very least I know Pietrangelo’s name has surfaced. Of course, there are other top-four, right-side options, including trading for Matt Dumba, among other things.
Link

The entire article discusses teams acquiring his rights meaning they’re allowed to sign him to 8 years - has this changed? I thought you had to have his rights prior to the trade deadline to do that.

Andy Strickland on Twitter backs this up - but says Pietrangelo owns a full-NTC so would have to waive for his rights to move.

If Brodie leaves I still think Treliving will take a long look at Barrie. He covets defensemen and I don't see how he lets Hamonic and Brodie go without bringing back an established top 4 defenseman.

The article discusses the Blues sign and trading him so he can get the 8th year to bring the AAV down.

That’s not what he says at any point though.

Quote:
The tricky part is the sequence of events. Obviously, if a team is trading for Pietrangelo’s rights it must be at least a few days ahead of Oct. 9 to make it all work. Once free agency opens on Oct. 9, no team can give Pietrangelo eight years, not even St. Louis. He has to be signed by the end of Oct. 8 to an eight-year deal.

And any team thinking of trading for his rights will want to know if they’re even in the same ballpark contract-wise with Pietrangelo’s camp before making that deal. Which would require the Blues allowing that team to have that discussion with Newport Sports.
