He has played his entire career in Calgary, which also means that the Brodies have established pretty deep roots there. I think that would be an indication that he could re-sign. To put it another way, it makes better sense than him leaving for New York, or Columbus, or almost any other NHL team. Brodie is probably keen to return to S Ontario, but I would imagine he is also negotiating seriously with Calgary.

Mike Russo on tsn1040 this am saying flames and dumba make a lot of sense. Again Monahan comes up.

Lots of discussion already but beat writer from Wild adding fuel to fire.

Why would the Flames trade away their top scoring C when they already have a lack of elite talent in that area? If Monahan is going out, a true #1C had better be coming the other way.

Yeah, rumours say Monahan but in a 1:1 trade with Minnesota I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s Backlund going the other way as a center.

My take on this was that Russo is not wrong it makes a lot of sense but from a Minnesota point of view and not necessarily Calgary which is not wrong.

You look at who's been rumored to be in on him and what they've got I too think (from Minny's POV) CGY is their best option:

CGY - Monahan
WPG - Roslovic
VAN - Boeser

Sean is clearly the outlier here, and would be Minny's #1 target. But I don't think Calgary would do a 1 for 1 here, as many have said we'd be stupid to give up our #1 C without getting something of significant return back. I'd wager Backlund would be more likely to be the "guy" CGY would consider giving up if a 1 for 1 option was on the table myself.

Hard to imagine the Flames moving Hanifin before seeing how Valimaki has recovered from his knee injury. It would be irresponsible or desperate to pencil in a guy with 26 games of NHL experience and coming off a serious knee injury into your second pairing. If Hanifin gets dealt, I expect it will be mid-season.

Other teams do it with great success.

Trusting youth is the trend. They’re coachable and and have lots of raw talent.

If Hanifin can be used to improve the team elsewhere, I’d say you do it.

Agreed.
The only way I see this happening is if there are more trades in the works that would yield a #1C. Tree might have a tentative deal (or a basic structure of a trade) in place, but would only pull the trigger if another deal goes through.

Who knows, obviously just speculation.

I’d drop Donato and switch the 19th to 49th.

Draft Lundell at 9 + one of Perreault/Zary/Holloway at 19.

Monahan is getting criminally underrated in these Wild proposals. Dumba, moving up 10 spots in the draft, and a 2nd round pick from six years ago who’s never scored more that 25 points? Christ...

Hanifin is the youth though. He’s 23, only 2 years older than Valimaki.

He should not be available save for an overpayment.

Health concerns affecting moves is a lot different than last year. I'm sure the US is less attractive, especially certain areas that previously were. Ontario is different obviously. I'm not sure how Vancouver would play into it.

I am not sure if there is much to it but apparently cold weather is harsh for people with MS. If that is true, maybe Brodie is looking at a sunbelt or Cali team.

Our top six is so much worse without Monahan in it.

Sequence would have to be Monahan out, trade Gaudreau for a comparable top six forward (ideally a center), and then sign Hall.

I wonder if we could swing something around Bennett for Dumba. It seems the moves Guerin is making are based on potential. The potential of Bjugstad to return to form, the potential of Johansson to be a top 6 C. Maybe he sees the potential in center Sam Bennett.

Lots isn’t understood - some thoughts around altitude, distance from the equator - but I’d fully cheer for TJ and family if he chooses to go that route. Or maybe they want to be closer to extended family, or he could just be going off for a big pay day that the Flames can’t give him.

I think we’re going to miss Brodie in a big, big way - and I wish that guy nothing but the best. He was a great Calgary Flame.

Yeah but COVID can be a bigger risk for MS sufferers (mainly because their medications can lower immunity).

I was thinking this exact thing. I wonder if they asked everyone with a partial ntc for a list right after being eliminated. I could see Backlund for Dumba, that would be a great deal for the Flames IMO.
