I really think Kuemper is a great goalie and the best solution for the Flames this off season, but using the 19th overall makes me a little uneasy. I would much rather find a different package.
If it has to be the 19th pick then I would love it if we could grab Garland in the trade too. Cheap 40-50 point guy who can be here long term.

I would honestly rather roll the dice on Holtby than give up a first for Kuemper.
BUT, happy to have egg on my face in a year if they do it and Kuemper is actually worth the pick. I just don't trust his numbers at all.

Holtby is the real scare for me. Some terrible numbers, but has that pedigree of being a Vezina and cup winner. Feels like someone is bound to overpay for him.

Yeah it's tricky. Looking at every goalie realistically available via trade or free agency, there's not a single one I would feel comfortable sending a first for, and not a single one I would want to pay more than $5M (and most much less).
So many options, so much risk with most of them, and it just feels like overpaying by any means is going to be a big disaster.

They'd still have Raanta and Adin Hill has looked decent for them when he'd played due to injuries.

I think the flames probably want to come back with a duo of kuemper/talbot instead of kuemper/rittich.

I don’t think Talbot wants to be the backup. He made a comment sometime in the playoffs stating he felt he earned the chance to be a number 1 somewhere. Don’t have a link, I remember him saying it though.

I hate trading first round picks. Hate it. Ruins the draft and makes me queasy.
But if this solves the goaltending issue for the next say five years I guess I'd be on board with it (assuming Kuemper is open to extending in a year), as at least the pick is known unlike the Hamonic deal ... both in terms of where the team is drafting and pretty much exactly who they'd be looking at with the 19th pick.

I don't think Talbot will be interested in signing to be a backup and he is likely to get a small raise as well.

With Kuemper being a Sasaktoon kid, he might relish the idea of finishing his career close to home.

That is where I am too. I won't like the trade if it happens, but will understand it.

What about 2021? Probably a weaker draft.

I really feel like Treliving needs to be patient when he wants a player off a team that is desperate to shed salary. No need to overpay. They’ll fold eventually.

I would do it in a heartbeat.
Gives us another season to try and recoup one as well.

Kuemper has had back to back Vezina quality seasons, in most situations getting a player like that for a mid-late 1st round pick would be a steal.

I also hate trading first round picks in future years, where you assume that the team will be good, and the draft spot is unknown. See the sharks trade for karlsson, the leafs kessel deal, etc.

Phoenix has a history of shipping goalies out and seeing them fall off.
