That is good to hear that the NHL is really hands on with this instead of relying on Sportsnet.

Think the Flames have a really good chance to win this series based on all the good points that have been made in this thread. But in order to do so, I think there will be a few major keys to for the Flames to be victorious:
- Forecheck: Ward likes to deploy a pretty fierce forecheck, so Flames’ forwards will need to jump all over Winnipeg’s young defensemen early and often and force those turnovers to create scoring chances
- Backlund line will need to neutralize Winnipeg’s top line and score themselves. If they can do this successfully, the Flames should win pretty handily. When your top shutdown line forces the opposition’s top line to defend all night, I like your chances to win any game/any series.
- Goaltending: Pretty simple, can’t have another Brian Elliott like performance and on the flip side, we can’t get Jaroslav Halak’d. If Hellebuyck plays absolutely lights out for at least 3 games, Flames are done.
- Jets forwards are extremely skilled and can be dangerous off the rush with the talent they have, so the Flames’ defensemen will have to be very weary of when they pinch and how often.

I agree wholeheartedly with everything except for this: It would benefit the Flames much more to be wary, and not at all weary.

This is not what "bad" is. Bad is a team that scores less than their opponent and loses games.
When you're ignoring goals, you're choosing to ignore stats that don't fit what you want to believe.
The Jets are not garbage. They have weaknesses, and the shot-based stats do bring out some of those weaknesses, but you're stretching their significance way further than what the data says.
|
As I said ... you can stop at the bottom line, the result and call it a day. Not the deepest look at something, but I can't stop you.
But no ... it's not that simple.
Hellebucyck is part of their team so they have better five on five actual results than the Flames, but they're not the better five on five hockey club. There are plenty of statistics that prove that out.
I'm choosing to go deeper than the result, you don't have to. But I'm not ignoring stats that don't fit what I believe. I'm choosing to look into other elements than just goals to see how they play.
It's not hard to find stats that say they get out played five on five but have a great goaltender. Almost every preview of the Jets or the series by any source has said the exact same thing.

I heard (might have been Lebrun) that the games will be on a 5 second delay so they can block out "inappropriate language", so they must be expecting viewers to be able to hear a certain level of sound from the ice.

Well that is better than the cheap crowd noise but come on, kids hear the same thing on the playground or playing Fortnite. Just throw the "this program may contain course language" bit on there and let it all go.

Completely disagree.
Watching soccer with artificial fan noise has completely changed that watching experience for the better.
It will suck if they don't do that in the NHL.

Thought I read something that EA was providing fan noise. Which will be garbage.
