I will admit that my anti Peters bias is coloring my view a little.
But instead of debating the 9th best coach in the team's relatively short history, maybe we could go deeper on some of the players. Or maybe a poll on top 3 Flame broadcasters? Tough guys? Underachiever or over achiever? Overrated/underrated? Most colorful personality?
Only about a week or so until hockey games that matter will be starting.

I'm curious to see who finishes last though. Gully, Gilbert or Don Hay?

Sutter getting my vote this go round. I'll go back to Ward next round.
I would also enjoy a poll selecting the most entertaining Flames roster of all time or ranking the most entertaining players.

Peters had a fantastic season last year but when you look at the fact that he was losing the team in season two and the way he treated players I have a hard time considering him better than Brent who has a stellar .584 NHL winning percentage as head coach, is a good man, and was simply the wrong guy to coach a divided locker room that had veteran players set in their ways.

Gilbert for me because he totally lost his composure and caused the trade of Savard which set the organization back. Hay was not a good NHL coach but at least he was professional.

Gilbert is a lock to be last. Gully was just bland and made the playoffs. Hay was overmatched in the NHL but his team wasn't really expected to be all that good, anyway.
Gilbert drove Savard out of town and the team stunk. How many Flames coaches have had bitter feuds with star players?

Hay was the coach of an awful team that played better under its previous coach. He was no good, but not the worst.
Gully was a mediocre coach of a mediocre team that achieved mediocre results (1 trip to the play-offs, 1 miss). No good, but not the worst.
Gilbert was a complete disaster. He could not manage player relationships and had no business being a head coach at the pro level. He was the number one reason that Marc Savard was run out of town. He will always hold the position of worst coach for me.

Brent had some of the best rosters of the last two decades and did absolutely nothing with them.
Peters had a fairly average roster last year and got an incredible regular season out of them. If it wasn't for his off ice antics from years ago, he would still be coaching this team.

ABP-Anybody but Peters.
For me, what coaching really comes down to is imbuing your character into your players and creating a team. It turns out that Peters had very poor character and ended up being incredibly disruptive to creating that team dynamic. I don't think it's a coincidence that they collapsed at the first sign of vulnerability.
Coupling the poor playoff performance with a languid beginning to the next season, and then the racism fiasco added on top? For me, it wipes out any regular season success he may have had over a short period of time.

Can you really say that when some of Brent’s best options for the top 6 included Nigel Dawes, Jamie Lundmark, and David Moss?
The forwards were so bad that Hagman and Kotalik were fixtures on the second line, and Matt Stajan was the #1 center.

Savard was a fatty and lazy and deserved what he got In his exit with the Flames (it’s sad he got injured once he started playing). Gilbert was in the right for his treatment of Savard and was the coach the united the core and doesn’t get enough credit forward that.

That's just not true. Stajan was never the #1 centre until Hartley came around. Brendan Morrison and Olli Jokinen were the two 1Cs during the Brent years. And I don't remember Lundmark ever being close to the top six after Keenan.
Brent had Iginla, Tanguay, Jokinen, Cammalleri, Glencross, Hagman, and Stempniak and yet his teams couldn't score. It was agonizing.

Stajan was the #1 centre for most of the 2009 season, since the Jokinen experiment had already failed at that point. In 2010 Langkow was out of the picture, and Stajan and Morrison took turns swapping between the #1 and #3 positions, with Jokinen usually playing on the second line with Bourque and a rotating cast that included Glencross, Kotalik, Hagman, Dawes, Moss, Boyd, and Lundmark. I even recall Jason Jaffray getting a small handful of games at the #1 LW spot prior to Darryl's December 2009 meltdown. Cammalleri was a very late addition to Brent's tenure as coach.
Any way you cut it, the forwards during the Brent Sutter years were pug fugly, and if that's what constitutes some of the best rosters this team has had in two decades that's a black mark on the franchise itself. Keenan and Playfair had way more to work with IMO.

Yeah I have a tough time siding with a player that has a low GAS meter and shows up repeatedly out of shape for hockey seasons. Started whining when Conroy showed up from reports at the time.
The player has to own that. The coach has to punish/reward players that are playing well, pay attention to systems and show up in shape.
The GM has to be more patient in trading said player for literally anything.

Stajan wasn’t a Flame in 2009
