Calgary Flames All Time Roster - Starting Goaltender
So some details ...
1. Calgary players only
2. I'll look at games played, production and PPG to list options.
3. My cut off won't effect options as I'll go deeper than required
Day to Day
We elect a position, say 2nd line RW, remove that name and do the 3rd line RW the next day.
I'll post a summary as we go along.

Never understood the dislike for Mike Vernon in this city. He came from a time of inflated goals against average and low save percentages, but got it done in two playoff drives which something no other goaltender in team history can say.
Huge part of the cup win.
But Kiprusoff took an average team to within a win of the cup, held the modern day goals against average mark for a spell, won a vezina and started 70 games a year.
Could be the best player in Flames history.

I voted for Kipper - I definitely don't dislike Mike Vernon, but in terms of pure talent in the position compared to contemporaries, Kipper is really untouchable. Vernon helped tip great teams over the top, but Kipper really helped some so-so teams get a lot further than they deserved to go.

this was much tougher than I thought, Kipper by a hair over Vernon.
Pat Riggin is my first memory of being a young Flames fan so I have a soft spot for him.

Yeah, with full respect to Vernon, who I love and think was a great, under-rated goalie...give me 2004 Kipper for any game I ever need to win.

Vernon yelling at me when I was 10 and asked for a second autograph for my baby brother (that was standing beside me) sort of soured me on him.

I grew up a huge Vernon fan but Kipper is my starter and I’m not sure it’s even that close.

This franchise has zero Stanley Cup wins without Vernon’s performance in game 7 OT against Vancouver in 1989. And he outplayed Roy in the finals that year.
But Kipper was arguably best player in the league for a stretch. And hell, we named our dog after him.
This one is a tough call. No wrong answer IMO.
Went with Kipper.

Yeah I think the answer here is a somewhat easy Kipper, with a 2nd choice that is just as easy
I get Vernon 89 (especially round 1) and even Vernon 86, but he was one of (especially 89) of 10 great players on a great team
Kipper was one of two great players on a ragtag? team in 04. he was arguably (although probably only briefly) the best goalie in the world, and one of the best players in the world. I don't think that's Vernon
However if someone wants to argue we don't have the cup without him, I have time for that too

Kiprusoff is the greatest goalie in Flames history, without question.
This isn't to diminish Vernon's contributions in any way, but I don't know if you can even argue that his individual contributions were greater than Kiprusoff's even despite the results. Vernon played on a team that was dominant both offensively and defensively, Kiprusoff didn't have anywhere close to that, but their accolades are separated by a single game's result.
For that reason, to me, Kiprusoff stands clear above. As important as even Iginla during the same time was to this franchise, without Kiprusoff, I don't know if 2004 happens, and I don't even know if we're still in Calgary.

Good to see someone vote for Lemelin. He was great , just not as great as who I voted for. Kipper wins in a landslide.

Vernon sealed the deal in 1989. We would not have a Cup without him.

Absolutely which is why even though I picked Kipper I would be fine with Vernon getting selected as well. I feel Kipper did more than enough in 2004 for the Flames to win the cup and the team just couldn't get the offensive production needed to finish off the Lightning in the last two games of the series.

I was only 4 when we won the cup, so my memories of Vernon are a little hazy. I remember him in the early 90s, but didn't really start to get into hockey until I was ~10.
Kipper, on the other hand, came around when I was 18, so not only do I remember how incredibly he was, but I got to enjoy the red mile which wouldn't have been possible without him.

I voted Vernon but the arguments here have caused me to change my mind. No one has played net at a higher level than Kipper for this franchise.

Kipper at his best wasn't quite Hasek at his best, but he was similarly ludicrous in how his performance alone could completely deflate a dominant opponent and tip scales that had no business being tipped.

When I think of Kiprusoff I always think of that Detroit series.
Shots on goal in the series 187-153 for Detroit, and #34 had a .941 save percentage.
Less than 2.00 goals against average facing 30+ shots per game.

Miikka Kiprusoff is one of the top 3 most talented players to ever play for the Calgary Flames. Maybe the most talented.
