Reinhart was also a smart player, and those smarts kept him effective despite his injuries. Phaneuf was exciting for a couple of seasons.

Kipper had one good playoff run, Vernon won the presidents trophy twice as the Flames starter, went to 2 Stanley cups as a Flame winning one. I think he earned it.

Also hats off to Sarge. He has the shortest tenure of any player on that list but he made such an impact.

Wtf is a "foundational player?" Is he just the mascot?
Patterson was good, but Lanny scored 152 goals in his first 243 games here. That's a 63% goals-per-game during his first four seasons in Calgary. Not to mention a Captain and face of the franchise. Also scored one of the biggest goals in Flames history in Game 6 in '89.
But yeah, at least Iginla made the team... probably wouldn't have if this was done by NHL.com.

Also I don't like Nilsson on these lists. Most frustrating guy ever. Gretzky in the regular season, Jankowski in the playoffs.
I'd honestly rather have Monahan.

Hull shouldn't be on the Flames team for his 57 games played in his cup of coffee and rookie seasons. By that same logic then Jagr and Fuhr should be on the team too despite not being good while on the Flames.

It's basically a way for them to squeeze an additional player onto their roster at a position where a team is really strong.
For the Habs, they chose Plante to give them another goalie even though The Rocket or Béliveau are arguably more "foundational" to the Habs.
It will be interesting to see how they handle that for the Oilers because Gretzky is still the identity of that team even though he hasn't played a game there in over 30 years, but that would mean not having him as the top-line Centre.
For the Flames, it was either going to be Lanny or Iggy as the Foundational player, with the other as the top RW, IMO.

Very different teams in front of those goalies. Vernon is great though I just would have given the starter spot to Kipper. His career numbers as a flame are better.
Miikka Kiprusoff GP 576 (305 Wins) .913 Save % 2.46 GAA 41 SO
Mike Vernon GP 527 (262 Wins) .883 Save % 3.27 GAA 13 SO

Two different eras of hockey 80s high scoring vs low scoring 00s
The equipment in the 00s was way superior to what Vernon had to wear especially as the game wore on and those pads got wet.
Two different styles stand up goalies vs butterfly stance.
There is more than just wins and shutouts
Kipper was great loved the player, but Vernon has a ring won more playoffs games and that's the real season

As others have mentioned I substitute Reinhart for Phaneuf.
I also swap Peplinkski for Yelle.

Whatever, I like the list. However, I would probably fit Loob in there even over Mullen, but that's just me.
Phaneuf sucked the moment he left town, but when he was with the Flames he was a beast. Put up some of the best years ever by a defenseman with the franchise.
And for the record, I HATE Phaneuf. I can still see a reason to give him credit.

My guess is that their "foundational player" for the Oilers will be Ryan Smyth.

I agree. The biggest argument in favour of Kiprusoff is that he took an average team to the Stanley Cup Finals. Except, Vernon did too (1986 Flames had 89 points) and they knocked off the "unbeatable" Oilers along the way.

the oilers are center heavy- my guess is they will grant the Oilers some leeway- we will not see plugs like Lumley, Pisani or Horcoff manning their 'shutdown ' line. they will make one of their centers foundational and then call a line like Smyth Weight Tikkanen their shutdown line so they can go all high octane with the rest of the forwards

Not that I disagree with you but doesn't this same argument work against Reinhart as well. I mean Phaneuf left on bad terms and the fact that the return wasn't good, his decline in play with his hip injury, and the fact he primarily played on pretty bad teams, it really sours some peoples view of him. The fact that the team he was on was one which had very high expectations coming off 2004 and was never able to live up to the run.
His first few years in Calgary were some of the best years anyone has ever seen from a young defenseman though.

I actually really like the way that TSN is doing this with a checking line and a defensive line.
Personally I would say that Gilmore could be put into a checking line as well - at least a lot better than Nilsson.
Roberts - Nieuwekdyk - Iginla
Gaudreau - Monahan - McDonald
Tkachuk - Gilmore - Fleury
Peplinski - Otto - Hunter
Conroy
Suter - MacInnis
Giordano - Brodie
Regehr - McCrimmon
Phaneuf
Kiprusoff
Vernon
I think that gives two good scoring lines, a defensively responsible and feisty checking line, and a defensive line with a goon.
As for Conroy - he has been the face of the team for almost the past 20 years, from his breathless interviews in 2004 to his emotional return and still working in the front office, I think that he more than any other player really defines the franchise in the 21st century, which is funny when you consider how much people hated the Stillman trade at the time.
