Believe there were a few stories of not showing up for camp in the best of shape as well.

I feel this. I still think about how cool it may have been to have a Stillman-Savard-Iginla line circa 2004-2008. And I love Conroy. Anyway, I’m going with Tonelli for sure. Such a big addition at the time and a “hockey player’s hockey player”. Even though he was gone, I like to think he had a tremendous impact on the ‘89 team. Honourable mention to Simpson for wearing the “C” for the Young Guns.

yes the stuffed in the locker/Rangers thing (hearsay? outgrown by Calgary?)
some on the record (if I recall) comments of him dodging arranged fitness appointments with the club during the offseasons

my recollections (those these may be either clouded or biased- although I don't hate the player) was he was not very gracious publicly about Conroy outplaying him and taking his spot

for sure Button and Gilbert deserve F- grades for their handling of all this- he wouldn't be the first enigmatic or difficult asset a NHL franchise has had to learn how to manage

and instead of being an adult and handling things quietly and face to face with the GM and/or coach and utilizing his agent...went public with his grievances by talking to the media. Twice. Including a demand to be traded. Wonder what that did to his value when it was time to make the deal eh?

John Tonelli Flames were lucky to have this guy, total all-star gave 110% was sad to see him go to LA. Would have loved to have had him win another cup in 89.

There are some great players, but not many that meet the bar as some of the other votes. I guess it comes down to personal criteria. For me the two big components are tenure and productivity. A lot of these players were great or played most of their time not in a flames uniform. Not a whole lot of players there played more than 200 games for the Flames.

Does anybody know what's the story with Beers? He just dropped out of hockey the summer after we traded him to St.Louis.

I chose Tonelli because I feel he had a larger impact than Hamilton.

I wanted to go with Roy for his floating shoes gimmick during After Hours.

Forgive my 90s Flame ignorance but what how did Button totally drive this team off a cliff to now being this heralded TSN scout and mouthpiece. Is he just another loud mouth like Doug Armstrong?

He got lucky on Conroy. Nobody expected him to put up the points he did. At the same time he gave up a better player in that deal imo.

Great player, but didn't have the tenure in my mind.
Your polls are for the greatest Flames. Perhaps they should be changed to the greatest Calgary Flames then.

Personally, I think the Atlanta Flames days are part of the storied history of the franchise. I find it disappointing that others want to divorce themselves from the origins of the Flames. The very name of the team comes from Atlanta history and not from Calgary.

I really liked Hamilton here. Would welcome him back in open arms if he ever wanted to return.

I was wondering this and looked it up, apparently he suffered a herniated disk in the 86-87 preseason. He was one of my favorite early Flames.

I'm always for Tonelli. One of the great acquisitions buy the true Wizard enroute to the first finals but to bad he wasn't there for the Cup. By that time McLellan wore that number.

There may have been immaturity in Savard but the team should have been patient with that. To anyone who was paying close attention Savard’s talent was undeniable. Combine that with his feistiness and drive, he was perfect for Iggy.

My brother and I were scoffed at by friends by saying he was going to be a top 10 scorer. We loved his game. Just a terrible handling of the situation and subsequent trade.

I see your perspective
I also see Bingos
I also appreciate some of the younger folks saying they can only vote for what they know

from my side I don't really want to 'divorce' from the Atlanta franchise- I have nothing against those years, just realistically although I'm on the middle-age to old on the spectrum of the voters I was a kid when the Flames arrived in Calgary....I can tell you everything about the team, and numbers resonate viscerally with me from 1980 onwards, but prior to that the Atlanta Flames were just a 'hockey card' team for me..we never saw them on TV that I can recall (I think I remember one playoff series with the Leafs maybe?, other than the very rare Saturday night) and while they were with Atlanta we (at least I) never even followed the team with the knowledge they were coming here

so sure I remember the cool hockey cards- cowboy flett, the Calders (Vail, Plett), Tom Lysiak, I knew they had a not bad goalie tandem in Myre and Bouchard, I knew Chouinard and MacMillan from the big 79 seasons but they weren't 'my guys' ...now the original Flames (including Vail, but the others Houston, Plett etc) its a bit different- these were the big names the became 'our guys' but in Vail's case- that's just one year

it's just my perspective, I realize there are probably folks on this site older than me, maybe even who grew up or followed the team in the states, or played with or grew up with some of the Atlanta Flames who will have a different frame of reference than I do- also cool
