Harder for the NHL to do this than the NBA. Teams are larger (more people) plus venues will be a challenge. NBA could theoretically run 3 to 4 games per day if they wanted to at a single location. I don't think an ice surface would hold up to this, you might get two games per day per location.

there are, literally, thousands of gymnasiums that theoretically could host an NBA game.
Ice rinks...not so much.
Never mind the difficulty in producing ice to begin with as the weather starts to change...particularly in the Southern states and other high humidity areas.
I know the NHL is hoping against hope that they can return, but there are just so many stumbling blocks to allowing it to happen in any realistic way.

Exactly if the nhl is determined to finish the season then play in Nunavut, no covid19 cases, cold climate and they can make some temporary rinks to finish it up. Otherwise end the season

Seems like a good way to bring a bunch of Covid cases to Nunavut where the healthcare system doesn't have the resources to handle it.
Just stick a fork in it, this season's over.

It's also much harder given how much of the NHL operates in two countries - players and teams.
For the NBA, you just force the Raptors to a neutral site in the US.
As far as ice surface concerns goes, you could do three games pretty easily. The WJHCs are 2-3 games every day.
None of this is realistic, however. The NHL doesn't want to cancel, so it keeps pushing two weeks at a time. But that is really just best case scenario planning.

Any league that tries operating without fans in neutral sites is quickly going to realize how pointless the games are without a home crowd or any crowd for that matter. Actually I think its a significant risk of looking very foolish and lame.
And the NHL trying that in the summer is beyond foolish. Laughingstock territory at that point.

So the league and the PA havent even talked about resuming the season, even in neutral sites.
Quote:
NHLPA executive director Donald Fehr says he has not talked to the league yet about any specifics related to potentially hosting a playoffs in the summer in neutral sites.
"Other than the general understanding that they're looking at all possibilities, which includes neutral sites -- neutral being defined as a place that isn't a home base for an NHL team," Fehr told ESPN. "We haven't had those discussions yet."
|
I find that astounding.

The season is over.

final nail for NHL season ?
The neutral site idea just has so much potential to fail and could become a PR nightmare. Imagine a player gets covid in the Stanley Cup finals and their team or the other team is like a game away from winning it all. There’s just so many possibilities of this going south. I hope one of the big sports tries it tho, just to see what would happen.

It's such a dumb idea.
But there's so much money being lost for these leagues from the TV contracts alone, that they're gonna be extremely desperate to put their players and staff at risk to make it happen still.

Elliott mentioned Edmonton as a neutral site because of their relatively new arena and all the new hotel rooms nearby.
FWIW even before the virus the ICE District has been an epic fail. New condo sales have been very slow and the Marriott Hotel was not doing well.

Especially since it would coincide with people being allowed to converge outside again.

The NHL could also play somewhere in the southern hemisphere where it is winter such as Antarctica. No corona virus cases down there either.

Home ice advantage for the Penguins throughout the playoffs.

|
Well, the players as per the CBA get 50% of revenues so those 80 million+ payrolls might be 30 or 20 million payrolls if you eliminated gate receipts. Not sure if that makes it affordable enough for the teams, but I wonder if that combined with maybe if all the NHL teams put local TV contract revenue in a pot and split it evenly 31 ways might be enough for everyone to come close to breaking even.

No testing is being done down there, so how do we know?

Will the players see it as being at risk if they have to play to basically try and save their jobs? I’m not so sure.
