Hypothetical Situation
Was talking with friends and in turn my parents when I got home.
If you were driving along at about 70 km/h, skidded off the road and down a 6 foot bank. What would you expect the damange in the car to be? And what injuries would you suffer from such an accient?
(the things you come up with bored on a long drive)

Way too many factors that would affect the accident that you didn't mention. Such as:
Terrain, Slope, Vegetation, vehicle type, experience and age of driver, weather, time of day.....
If one of the above changes, then the answer could drastically change as well.
Having seen vehicles in the aftermath of an accident you described, I could say it would range from no damage or injuries, to full on rollover with death.

Yeah, like Blackarcher said...way too many variables to consider. I know of one guy who died going off a lesser bank at under 80 km/h on a straight stretch of road. I drive on that stretch regularly and wonder how it could've happened. At any rate, you just never know. Look at Dale Earnhart's fatal crash - it looked harmless and would have been survivable, if not for the unusual angle of impact.

yeah... without getting into the details as I'm off to bed
- guy in the middle of the road
- swrive to miss him
- road turns, off a bank
- into the ditch
- horizontally did a 180
- car rolled (360)
- scratch on passanger's hand (just one)
- scratched my index finger getting back into the car
- passanger in the back, walked away fine
LOTS more variables, but that's the abridged version. I'm not overly shaken, but just wanted to know other possible outcomes.

Don't ride any roller coasters for a few years, you might have just used up your luck.

Glad to hear you are ok, Jon!
I had friends who were in a car that rolled. A guy was taking out a girl for the first time, a cousin of mine was in the back, they were on the way to picking up his girlfriend for a double date. I can't remember now what caused it (it wasn't a winter time accident), but the car did roll. My cousin in the back didn't have his seat belt on and had his window down. He was thrown from the vehicle and was fine, hardly had a scratch. Apparently the cops said if he had his seat belt on or the window up or both, he'd have been dead. The guy driving had some bad injuries, but lived to tell about it. The girl was killed. Three different outcomes based on where they sat in one accident.

If it was near the Sydney tar ponds just have the car buried in concrete! However, if it was near Halifax just blame it on me (the insurance companies have my number).

lol 'hypothetical'...
Very glad to hear you are ok! Now I know what your MSN message was about. Didn't think it was that serious, and didn't get a chance to talk to you.
Still not sure what you are asking though. As BlackArcher said, terrain would have a lot to do with it like the grade of slope and terrain and all.
Just off the top of my head, I wouldn't expect the car to be writen off, but I would suspect the windshield and some glass to need repairing, front bumper and hood pretty smashed up. Sounds like there should be body damage to the whole car if it rolled. Tire and joints, maybe axles?
Several thousand at least.
Surprised the injuries were not more severe, but al parties will want to get their necks and backs checked for whiplash symptoms. Sometimes it can take a while for those to show up, and if you've settled already without bringing attention to them, you might not get any compensation.

yep, daradon is right. I'll bet you're a whole hell of a lot more sore today than yesterday.

thanks guys,
I'm fine, not sore in the least... the guy in the middle of the road (at a blind crest turn, so you know the middle of the road is the best place to be... ugh) was a volunteer firefighter flagging traffic as there was an accident down the road a bit.
Fustrating that I woulda been ok if he wasn't there (so many details to type out, right now I just don't feel like it).
Car rolled twice (back over front, then rolled over the passanger side to go right side up again) but everyone walked away fine. Thankfully I handled the car well enough as to not make it roll sideways down the enbankment.
All in all I'm ok, but I was wondering worst case scenerios (I'm odd I need to know what wrong could have happened)

Hey if you wnted to, take your story to the car maker, im sure they'd love to make this into some sort of marketing campaign. "reality" advertising is hot hot hot right now.

Back in highschool I was a passenger in a car where the following scenario takes place.
16 year old guy who has had his drivers license for maybe 2 months has his parents car out. So like the intelligent kids we are there's 5 of us in the car (thankfully wearing seatbelts) out for a drive. We were on a gravel road in what I think was like a 1989 Mazda 626 (this is in 1992 so the car was reasonably new) so it's a front wheel drive car. Driving about 70km/h and the driver decides to start a slalom course causing the car to fish tail. Naturally he over does it and car spins out of control and first rolls onto it's side drivers side up in the air. We were sort of perched on the ditch where we were sort of balanced right on the edge until you hit the down slope and the car was wobbling. Of course the driver is panicking and thinking that we can get out and push the car back on it's wheels. As the first guy jumps from the car the momentum rolled the car onto it's roof. None of us suffered any injuries, and I think he said the damage ended up costing him $2500, which is probably $5500 or $6000 today, although most of it occured when the car rolled even though it was like a slow motion roll over.

I feel kinda humbled that I knew what to do when the car skidded to prevent the car from rolling down the hill on its side. Fustrated that the idiot of a fireman was in the middle of the road causing me to make a sudden moment (swirve) to miss him.
I'll post a good recap eventually (today's been very chopy in terms of "I have to do this, this, this and this)
The car was a 2002 Toyota Carolla, they've got my vote for safety!
