I mentioned this to a Sled Island board member last week - they had not contemplated this yet, but now it is on the radar. Maybe they can pull off a limited festival with local and Canadian bands if international acts can't come.

Could be the summer of no festivals.

Looks like Coachella is looking into moving the festival to October. If that doesn't work they are likely going to cancel.

SXSW and Ultra are not offering refunds - instead they are allowing ticket holders to defer their passes to 2021 or 2022.

When Sled Island cancelled in 2013 after the flood, they asked purchasers of passes if they wanted refunds. Most declined the refund, and this probably helped the festival stay alive.

Probably a lot more local attendees for that.
I see this being difficult with events like Coachella that most people have to travel in for.

Spring concerts

Calgary Folk Music Festival
The Folk Festival Society of Calgary’s staff and board are watching the COVID-19 situation very closely. Given that our 41st annual four-day summer festival is five months away, we are cautiously optimistic that everything will proceed as usual and we are continuing in full on planning mode.

In the meantime, we are following the Public Health Agency of Canada’s mass gathering risk assessment protocol. We are being vigilant, and we are communicating with our colleagues, stakeholders and the City of Calgary. We are, of course, committed to the health and safety of everyone — our audiences, volunteers, staff and artists — and we look forward to seeing you this July.

Shambhala is expected to still roll. Sounds like they're anticipating the peak NA spread of the virus in May/June and taper off before the event. Things are fluid but I sincerely hope to be going and working there again this year

At this time, we are continuing with our preparation and planning to deliver the festival as scheduled, but we are monitoring the situation closely, both locally and internationally.

Unfortunately, the scope and nature of our festival make it impossible for us to simply postpone the event until later in the year (to learn more, please visit our Frequently Asked Questions below). However, we have every intention of returning in June 2021 and are committed to supporting our community to the best of our abilities in the meantime.

What impact will this cancellation have on the festival? The short answer is that we don’t yet know. While we have had close communication with multiple funders, municipal and provincial representatives and stakeholders of all kind, and are thankful for the levels up support they have already committed to us for the year, and while we are confident we can weather this storm and return in 2021, the reality is that we don’t really know the landscape we will be facing in 2020 and beyond. As stated, sponsorship, pass and ticket sales for the 2020 festival had largely vanished at the onset of the pandemic. There will continue to be real question marks for us around expectations for all of our major revenue sources, from box office to sponsorship to government funding and beyond.
