In that scenario if you can manage to flip him for a center that is better suited to 1C than Monahan, then you'd have to look at it.
It's a valuable position though, not sure where you find that trade that works both ways, even if Gaudreau has huge value. Most teams wouldn't want to put themselves down a peg in the middle, even if for a dynamic winger.
You could probably only swing it right now for a C that is still up and coming with a high ceiling. But Brad wouldn't do that in the midst of his window, especially after picking up Hall.

I agree if they sign Hall long term trade Johnny for more long term assets. Maybe Reinhart+1st? Maybe Cozens instead if Johnny can beast out over the next 15+ games or the Flames add a little?
Reinhart can be signed to a 6 year deal and add another right shot C/W to the mix?
One of the keys is ensuring in a little over 1-2 years time this team looks poised for a long window so they are able to sign Tkachuk to a max term deal and make him the next captain of the team.

Hall shouldn't make any more than Duchene. If the Oil want to get into a bidding war to go over that, by all means.

Hall seems like the wrong kind of UFA to spend money on. One year that he was MVP material, but he is going to score ~20 this year, which he seems to be his go forward ceiling. From the outside seems to be a not good teammate. Coyotes have imploded since he arrived (maybe other issues as well). Only one year in playoffs.
I suppose if we want to get in on the #1 draft pick discussion he is a good signing.

Well, for the playoffs (if we get there), it's a show us -time for Gaudreau, Monahan etc. That's what I thought before the first regular season game. Just waiting for the playoffs to see Johnny Hockey. If it doesn't click, just trade him and maybe you can sign Hall and get some C/RW-high end skill by trading Johnny.
Of course, if we get to the playoffs and Johnny doesn't execute.

A. The coyotes downturn isn’t “maybe” other factors. It’s definitely other factors. Specifically goaltending.
B. Spending money on Hall is OK. The question is how much. Tkachuk money is fine. Panarin money is not.

Hoffman is also a UFA
Going at virtually the same P/G clip as Gaudreau and Tkachuk this season on that listless Panthers team.
I'd be willing to throw 8-9 at either guy (probably less for Hoffman), but if they're set on 10+, if I'm any GM I'd probably be out.

I imagine this news could lead to an increase in trade activity at the draft. There have probably been more than a few trades left on the burner over the last year that couldn't be completed for cap reasons.

Buffalo may have learned a lesson with them going all in on a 26 year old smaller skilled guy coming off a 40 goal season -- Skinner.
Gaudreau's value was at a peak last year but there would be a lot of question marks after this season.
What do you think Reinhart signs on a 6 year deal? He has very similar goals and points as Dylan Larkin

Johnny and Skinner aren't very comparable. Johnny has a much higher floor and a much higher ceiling.

Pro athletes make too much and this makes me want to spend less on tickets. It’s getting crazy. Owners and players do not need more money.
This will be unpopular, I understand and totally expect to be flamed for it. That’s okay.

You can always watch for free from your local watering hole and they probably have better wings and cheaper beer.

Yes, let's blow money on Hall. Not like we are not used to mediocrity. Why not just flush any hope of success down the toilet and be done with it?

Johnny has played 11 more games than Skinner.
Gaudreau 12 es goals Skinner 14 ES goals. Johnny needs 18 es goals to hit his last years total same a Skinner. It is hard to understand/believe how far Johnny has fallen. Gaudreau is tracking to 69 points... 30 less than last year. How does someone wanting to trade for him rationalize that.
Pretty much everyone, including Skinner, knows he is having a crappy year.
With Skinner's 9m x 8 yrs deal he has no trade value without the Sabres retaining salary or taking back salary.
Just saying that Gaudreau's value is not what it used to be.
PS. If the Flames were able to extend Johnny next season would you give him a 9x 8yrs?
I would have done than in a flash after his 99 pt seasson.

What would you do with the extra cap space
What's not a move to prolong mediocrity in your book?

Johnny is having a down year. 99 points to 69 points isn't ideal sure but Skinner has never even come all that close to 69.
Iginla had the following year-by-year declines in his career:
96 to 67
89 to 69
86 to 67
It happens to everyone.

The 5th highest scoring team in the NHL this year and 9th last year is far from listless.
