What are the conditions on the 3rd? Apologies, but I never saw it written anywhere.

Chicago gets the earlier of our third picks assuming that we get one from Edmonton.

It's not so much a condition per se as it is a forced choice.

In the event that Neal scores 21 goals, the Flames will have 2 3rds. The Hawks will get the earlier 3rd. If Neal doesn't score 21, they get the only 3rd.

If we can have him playing on the 3rd pairing, possibly the 2nd if needed and on the PP, I think he will help improve this team. I like what I am seeing in the offensive end, I guess we will see for ourselves how he is in the defensive end. I hope he plays tonight!

If Gio is still out, then I guess I would like to see this tonight:

Hanifin - Anderson
Kyllington - Brodie
Forbort - Gustafsson

Throw them right into the fire from the start, see what can happen.

Has to be better than Stone, Davidson or Yelesin. I have a feeling this won't happen tonight though.

I wasn't a fan of the trade but am warming up to it. I've always thought one of the biggest offensive needs of this team the past decade has been a reliable one-timer. For whatever reason this team has had no one reliable since Wideman's 2015 season and before that Cammy and Iggy.

As good a shooter Monahan is, he rarely does it. Tkachuk actually has a great one, but rarely uses it. Gio does his all weird, and Stone's never goes in. That seems to be where it ends. Johnny and Wideman had such great chemistry years ago with a nice crisp pass to Wideman and him one-timing it. It would be fantastic if Gustaffson and Johnny could find similar chemistry.

Yes it looked fine for a few months. But I don’t think it was as effective in February, March and into the playoffs. Clearly it failed spectacularly against the Avs and even this season it’s been extremely inconsistent.

I would say the relentless forecheck that Peters, Ward and co deploy puts this team in to trouble at times. They’re constantly caught up the ice trying to forecheck and because they’re not fast enough to get back, they open up the middle and end up getting torched with goals against. That was definitely what I saw in the series against the Avalanche.

We’ve seen other teams deploy a similar system and because they’re much faster, they look unrelenting on the forecheck and the backcheck.

@Fan960Wills

It looks like Erik Gustafsson will quarterback #Flames PP1 and Mark Giordano will move to PP2. #CGYvsBOS

Basically. If that happens Treliving is using extra picks he previously got in both of yesterdays deals.

ETA: I forgot that Calgary also traded a 4th round pick previously (Fantenberg) so the one they got for Frolik is the only one they had.

I like this movie quite a bit. Low cost and I think the rest of the season serves as a bit of a try out for the player for next year. If he performs, I think the Flames try hard to bring him back and opens the door to letting Brodie/Hamonic walk if his ask is too high for the team. Not saying that Gustafsson will end up in the Top 4, but it could allow Treliving to target a 4/5 RHD to replace Hamonic with Rasmus moving to top pairing with Gio knowing that if the new incoming player slips, perhaps Gustafsson could slide up the lineup if needed.

Going to be nice to finally have a point threat.

Here's his goals this year:

Yeah, no one since Hamilton has been a real threat there.

Sometimes Gio when he skates in a bit to put one of those seeing eye wristers in, but he hasn't done that much this season. And he doesn't slap the puck like that. Very much looking forward to Gaudreau feeding him set ups like Kane did in a lot of those highlights.

If this gets us even 3-4 additional PP goals down the stretch it's a boost for the team's chances.

These look very similar to the goals he scored during his 60 pt season.

This is 100% something this team needs. I hope the team changes the powerplay and introduces multiple threats, down-low, slot and now more often setting up this option.

Let’s hope it clicks, our pp needs a shake.

Flames are already playing with multiple threats down low and in the slot on the PP with Monahan & Tkachuk. Even Lindholm is often in tight.

The problem we've had is teams know that moving it back/out to the D & Gaudreau isn't leading to a shot.

Agreed. I think you misread my post, that’s exactly what I said. We need this as an additional option as we only have 1, maybe 2 options, this gives us a 3rd (point threat) which is the shakeup we need.

Gio and Gaudreau have made their passes too predictable, that's the issue. Not hard to defend because you can see where they're going to try to put the puck a couple seconds before they try.

Gustafsson being described as a guy that can make that special pass manning the point as the QB could be big. Maybe it lends confidence to Gaudreau to do more creative things as well. Something there needed a shake up either way.

I don't know. You wrote about changing the powerplay. I don't think they need to change anything as long as Gaudreau tees up Gustafsson.

Who is he teeing up today? All I see is half-wall shots from either side , and trying to force the pass to the slot. Having the point as real threat and using it is the change we need. In my opinion. There is no point adding a threat up top if we’re not going to use it an as option.

A bit off topic but I think both of the defencemen picked up are almost a tryout basis. Forbert is a bigger and younger Hamonic replacement if he plays well, and Gus is a Brodie replacement if he does what is supposed to do.

I agree with this post, but maybe the issue is there is no sense teeing up the point if they shoot it 4 feet wide every time or into someone's pads.
