The other win for the Oilers in this is that Athanasiou draws a ton of penalties with his speed.
With how potent that PP has been for them this season that could be big down the stretch.

Good pick up for the Oilers, he's a definite upgrade to their roster. Steep price to pay for what i think amounts to a rental but hard to argue with this one.

I also would imagine he'd be smart enough to realize there aren't many better spots to raise your RFA value than on the wing of Mcdavid (heck, Draisaitl). He'd be smart to take a 1 year show-me deal, and hit a home run the next season.

He will be an RFA this summer. At 25 you'd have to imagine that he will be asking for the deal that will set him up for the rest of his career.

The Oilers will have trouble paying him even a match for his current deal under their salary cap for next year.

Athanasiou has like 24 points this season. I think it’s a good gamble that he can rebound with McDavid or Draisaitl but let’s also not pretend they’re adding a superstar here.
