Somewhat surprising stat of the day: the Wild made the playoffs 6 straight years before missing last year.

Because they trade their first round pick every season. It makes sense for them. Everything is probably based around maximizing the remaining years of Crosby/Malkin.
They are at the point now where a first round pick might take 3-5 years to help out and that's essentially the rest of Malkin/Crosby's careers.
Trading that first for a guy that is probably a 60 point player in Pittsburgh is a good play.

Haven't followed how Hartman, Eriksson Ek, Pateryn or Foligno have been performing. Maybe there would be interest in some of those guys. Maybe not.
That only leaves Suter and Parise.
|
Why would they trade Fiala or Donato at this point?

I think both Parise and Suter (more so Suter) would fetch a really solid return at 50% retention.
Both only have 3 years left before their contracts drop to a million per season so anytime after that they might pull the retirement chute.
Both are still good players, and I think a contender calibre team could use either under $4 million.
As for wanting to leave, maybe not. I'm not sure any player that signs a 13 year contract going to a meh team really has winning at the top of their list.

Having Crosby and Malkin they have been an attractive team for NCAA free agent types. They have signed some good young guys over the years which essentially replace these traded late first round picks.
One thing is clear though, Rutherford prefers to build up front and opt for a servicable crew on the back end.

Foligno is having a hot year. Maybe he’s attractive to a team.

They also make quite a few solid deals.
Schultz for a 3rd rounder, for example.

Yeah, he's one of those guys like Jame Neal that will score some points if you have enough other good players to hide him.
They also picked up Marino from the Oilers for a 6th rounder after Marino made it clear he wasn't going to sign in Edmonton. He looks like he might be better than Schultz ever was.
Which makes for an interesting side discussion on whether Canadian teams should think twice about drafting American college bound prospects in the later rounds. Fox left the Flames hanging as well. Seems like a "Russian" factor to me.

You think Minnesota would deal these guys @ 50% retention for five years? That's over $7.0 m of dead cap space for half a decade.

It will take at least half a decade to break their meh cycle that they are in. They are basically the 2005 to 2013 Flames a decade later save a couple first round series wins.

Nope. I don't think Minnesota has any intentions of going into a rebuild cycle. I just think those guys would have value if Minnesota did want to go in that direction.

I wonder if Pens double down and also try for Toffoli who they are also reportedly interested in. Or does this take them out?
They don't have a 2nd this season. Maybe if they have a prospect the Kings really like to make up for a 2nd in 2021?

Sorry but Zucker wasn’t going to push the flames over the top last year so I’m happy that deal was squashed, I’d much rather have Pelletier and this years first

The pens are going to come crashing down at some point once Crosby and Malkin start to decline. Their cupboards wil be bare and they won't be attractive without a superstar to play with. I guess they crash just in time to pick up the next superstar and start again, typicl pens.

That's equivalent to Bennett + 2020 1st/2020 2nd + Kylington.
Not sure I would have paid that price for Zucker.
