But same outcome, as Tkachuk can take the awarded qualifying offer after year 3 and walk to UFA without having to negotiate another contract.
Slightly different contracts but same premise: GM can't afford long term contract on player he sees in long term plans because of cap constraints. We were one off season Frolik dump away from having Tkachuk for 6-8 years. Rumour is New Jersey backed out on Frolik and that was the difference between our future captain being signed long term and being walked to free agency.

Point taken, but Andersson is still a hell of a player for that contract. And the huge take away for me if you're comparing Calgary and Edmonton is we both whiffed on locking down core players long term due to cap constraints with useless plugs taking up too much cap (Tkachuk and Nurse).

Why on Earth would Darnell Nurse ever get a deal that started with an 8?

Andersson is a superior player to Nurse in every conceivable way. Nurse is an average to below average 2nd pair D with decent tools and no toolbox. 5.6 is an overpay, and taking right up to UFA is a bit sad for the Coilers.
Look forward to another huge overpay by them in 2 more years lol.

$5.6M x 4 years would have been a good contract.
$5.6M x 2 years, going straight to UFA is not.

I think if you look at the Oilers cap situation 2 year deal kinda makes sense if they want to keep the current core together. After next year, they're no longer paying $4M to Russell and $2.6M of the current $4.1M in buyouts is gone. After two years, I would imagine they feel they will have a lot more flexibility.
Having said that, Nurse at $8M+ is a hilarious overpay for what he brings in my opinion if that's the floated long term contract.

I think there was some confusion by a few over what Stang was speaking to. Stang was originally speaking to the $8mi that was reported in the media for this deal. Now it is important to note that Stang's dismissal of that number is a little misguided as a long term Nurse deal (way more ideal, imo) would have likely been in the 7-8mil range. (make no mistakem this AAV is low because he's going to UFA in just two years)
But it was actually textcritic who brought up the next contract in this thread and stated it starts with 8mil, and he's also right.

Yes but Andersson is rapidly trending towards being a top pairing guy. He is already a second pairing guy at 23. Three, 4,5 and 6 years from now, Andersson will still be getting $4.55M. Nurse will be around $8M. And might not even be an Oiler!

You think they would have awarded less? It's possible I suppose, but arbitration seems like it usually rewards the player.

Who would be arbitration comparable even close to 5.6?
Even McAvoy and werenski who are way better players were less money for more term.

I get that the rumour was Nurse wanted $8 mil per year but when does a player get exactly what the agent is claiming he is worth. A good GM talks that down to at least $7.5 for 8 years. If you don't like $7.5 mil cap hit then to me 7 years or 6 years should get the number to high 6's or 7. Even 5 years at 6.25 to 6.5 makes way more sense
Everything Ken Holland has done since becoming GM of the Oilers is all about now with 0 consideration for his cap situation in the near future. 0 long term core player moves. Kassian is the only long term deal to this point and for me this move is a move that at best he plays par with his contract but has potential to be a huge bust.
Nurse signed right to UFA status.
Signed a bunch of 1 year deals.
I still have yet to see him make a move that adds to his core long term

Calgary still has that opportunity however.

8????????????????????????????????
There are 7 defensemen in the league that make 8 or more. Nurse isn't even a top 60 defenseman in the league. He's not even the best defenseman on a team with few good defensemen.
An 8 is what happens when you're the hyped prospect that actually plays in the NHL in Edmonton.

But if Nurse is smart he'll maybe engage in good faith discussion with the Oilers, but ultimately test free agency where he can take every interested team and get the best contract available from every GM, and take that contract with the Oilers if he wants to stay or go to a wicked US city if any of them are the on the upswing and interested.
Not a shot at Edmonton as I fully believe Tkachuk will do the same and they'd both be stupid not to. This was the same boxed in deal that Brad negotiated, both are a failure and will create major cap hits at best and lost players at worst when they're up.

Nurse is a bottom half of the defense defenseman, he doesn't have the hockey IQ or sense especially in his own end to progress above that. No one is going to turn down the chance to up his deal, especially with the Oilers media hype machine backing his cause.
If I was Edmonton, I would maximize his value this year and trade him for top 6 help, he'll be at the height of his value, and supposedly Edmonton has a Calder trophy contender in Bear and at least 3 other top pairing defenseman ahead of him, so why mot trade from a position of strength.
but there's a reason why he took a two year deal. So he can get the best 8 million dollar deal in a year from a desperate Oilers team, or leave Edmonton happily.

Kind of. If Tkachuk is happy in Calgary and with the direction of team at the end of this contract then we at least have that RFA negotiation period at the end of year three.
But if A) the team is still faltering and looking like they won't contend in this build or B) he's shrewd or has shrewd direction and sees it as a no brainer to take a high AAV awarded for year four and negotiate with the whole league a year later (possibly still taking Calgary's deal after putting it through the whole league ringer to elevate it as much as possible), then I believe he'll most likely take the arbitration award and do what's best for him (A full UFA contract and choice of where to play).

Again, Stang was just speaking to media speculation, not suggesting Nurse is worth that and Edmonton made out like bandits. Think Giordano's last contract where media was speculating a $9mil AAV ask on Gio's side.

True, Nurse could've been awarded more through arbitration, but neither party wants to go through any uncertainty and it's much better to be in control of the numbers through settlement than to roll the dice
Nurse's agent pretty much asked to see Holland's wallet, took all of the cash from it and told him "be thankful I didn't take your credit cards"
I'm not sure there was much negotiation tactics involved when Nurse's AAV pushes them right to the cap

Let’s not forget bigger, faster, tougher, with 128 hits vs 38 for Andersson.
