Ottawa too.

Vancouver, Calgary, and Edmonton are the only teams that are currently exclusively on Sportsnet. The Leafs' regional games are split between Sportsnet and TSN because the team's ownership is split between Rogers and Bell.

Rather unlikely. TSN doesn't have any radio presence in Calgary. Bell could reformat Funny 1060 into a sports radio channel, but honestly, the only three things worth listening to on sports radio in this city are the Flames, Stamps and Blue Jays. And TSN won't be getting the Stamps or Blue Jays any time soon. It's not really worth it for them to go after radio rights. The market just isn't big enough for two sports talk stations.

Also, every playoff game would be on Sportsnet/CBC too.

Don't like her? Mute the broadcast - you know who the players are anyway.

Or play the radio and listen to Wills/Loubo (no thanks, unless there is no other choice, for me).

Or stream the out-of-town feed for their audio. There are lots of choices. (Whining should not be one of them.)

Personally, I'd love to see a channel where there was only a video feed with the sounds of the game/arena and no announcers/colour.
 |
If Cassie was as bad as the experts here claim, she wouldn't be pushed up to the national broadcast.

Is she being pushed up to the national level based on skill, talent and merit or because of gender equality?

I honestly feel like because she's a recognizable woman in hockey that she gets those opportunities (but duh) since Sportsnet has the opportunity to break new ground by having a female colour commentator. I don't believe it's on talent because she's really doesn't provide insight or knowledge that's interesting to hear. She just mostly states the obvious and cliches.

And she's been at this for years. I think Sportsnet was hoping she'll grow into the position, and I was patient, but I feel she's pretty mediocre.

She likely got the gig due to her being a legendary female hockey player, along with having a relationship with a Flames executive. If Sportsnet did a thorough search for a female colour commentator, I feel that there's others out there who could do a better job honestly.

But maybe the pool for good colour commentators in general is just very shallow, and Cassie is on par with majority of regional broadcasts in the league. I do feel like Charlie Simmer was alright in the past though. There's also that one guy who has filled in a few times in the past couple of season I feel that comes off poised.

And it was mentioned on this thread by someone that Hrudey isn't that great. I kinda agree, he kinda has the same issue as Cassie in not offering interesting information, and is extremely reserved in passing on criticism to players, and goalies especially. But he has great chemistry with Ball, and the banter and jokes they have with each other does make it entertaining to listen to. That's also something that's jarring with Ball and Campbell-Pascal; their chemistry is non-existent, and there can be some dead air or awkward hand offs that can happen at times.

This is a lot more than I expected to write up about play-by-play. In the end, if Rogers doesn't renew with Flames, Bell will step right in and take up the void. It's 2020; every game will be broadcasted locally in this day and age.

You can say the same thing about stupid TSN cutting out to their SportsCentre show. TSN also has abrupt endings to their games.Quote:

When the Flames play a US-team and you watch their feed, they always have an extended post-game show to breakdown the game. Sportsnet pretty much kills the coverage as soon as the players get off the ice.

No one does a team only post game show anymore. The post game show is Sportscentre/Sportsnet Central. They seque the game into the coverage as soon as the game finishes if there's not another game right after.
Only way the classic post game shows that you're expecting would return is if Calgary Flames/CSEC made their own sports station. And that's never gonna happen.

Between the Fan and FlamesTV there is plenty of pre- and post-game coverage.

It does feel like they're wasting having the different Sportsnet regions. Other than the game itself there is no point.

Yeah the Calgary sports radio market isn't lucrative at all and TSN is pretty prudent when it comes to spending money so I don't see them having a lot of interest in starting up a sports station in Calgary. To make it feasible they would need to get the rights to both the Flames and Stamps.

TSN has stations in both Edmonton and Winnipeg.
If its works in those towns it could work in Calgary too, but 960 has a pretty strong hold on that segment now, so it would take some commitment from Bell.

The Stamps have 3 years left on their current deal with QR77, so that a non-starter at this time.

I would be a longshot for them to enter the market now, but down the road its a possibility.

I disagree - Cassie is far more likely to observe a technical point in the game that I missed, compared to Hrudey’s cliches and corny anecdotes. Yuck, yuck, yuck.

She offers the same level of insight and analysis as any other colour commentator I've listened to, so I don't really understand the criticism. And everyone LOVED Kelly Hrudey before the team started floundering.

People here aren't going to like it, but I think Ray Ferraro is at the top of the game when it comes to colour commentating.

I don’t know about winnipeg but TSN in Edmonton was the first fully sports radio station. They also don’t focus solely on NHL like a lot of folks around here wish the fan would do.

I would be shocked if another sports station could survive here.
