Default Condo building fire 14th ST and 23rd AVE SW, Bankview

Just heard about this but it doesn’t look good - hopefully everyone got out safely. Never a good time to happen but even worse given the time of year. Scary stuff.

I wondered what the crazy sirens were for. Condo fires are scary, especially if it’s wood-framed.

Calgarians are rallying to help residents who were forced out of their homes when a fire tore through their 56-unit condo building in the southwest on Friday.

But thanks to a home builder who was offering free rent to residents in one of three nearby homes, his family has a place to stay through the holidays.

Malhodra connected with the home builder after seeing his offer on social media.

"By his gesture I think that humanity still exists and there are good people in this world," said Malhodra.

He's thrilled his wife and two daughters, who are seven years and 18 months old, will have a home over the holidays.

I used to rent a house right there. It was $140/ month, I think, maybe $180.

I have lived in that building for almost 20 years (since it was built). My wife and I are 'homeless' and will be for a while. We're being told that there's a possibility the building may never be safe. Repair, reconstruction could take up to 18 months.

The fire department told us the night of the fire that there was 3 feet of standing water on the 4th floor.

(We're not actually homeless. It's been a scramble but we have housing. As always, people in Calgary have provided unbelievable levels of support. It's going to be a long slog.)

That's a terrible Christmas present. If you need anything to help get you settled, let me know. I lost all my possessions in the flood six years ago and I know what it means to have to start over from the ground up.

Weren’t you like 17 then? I feel like his situation is a little more complicated than that.

Thanks Scorp. Not the Christmas we were looking forward to for sure.

I'm sure there will be things we need in the coming days and weeks, but for now, for the holiday season, we've got housing and there has been an outpouring of support from the community so for now, we're okay. Thanks for the offer. It's very nice of you.

Hey, hey now. Be nice. Remember this is the season. Scorp was just reaching out human to human with an offer to help. It doesn't matter what my situation is like today versus his experience 6 years ago. It's not a contest.

Merry Christmas!

If that changes, or even there's just little things you didn't realize you needed in the coming days/weeks, please post them in here. We'll have you covered.
