Other than the old days of Rock'm Sock'm hockey, Don Cherry should've been fired a long, long time ago. Time has passed him by, just like time has passed CBC. I can't believe Sportsnet signed him on. Can't stand him for his stupid rants. It's about time and good riddance!

Don Cherry was a career minor league tough guy during the Original Six era, the tail end of which saw the rise of NHL expansion and the rival WHA. In the rush to fill vacancies, European and College-trained players entered the talent pool. Cherry did find success as a coach in the AHL milieu, but was over his head at the NHL level as European and American College hockey coaching techniques took hold.
He is a relic of a bygone era.

Cherry is a stubborn old fool. Common sense would say to him that he should apologise for his comments but he wont and that's sad.
Free speech has it's limitations when you're employed by someone else. You can't just say whatever you want and not have consequences for your actions. SN would have lost it's sponsors had they let Cherry stay. Plus Rogers reputation would have gone down the toilet.
I got tired of his rants when it got to things not related to hockey.

He could have chosen to walk back his comments with some clarifying statements without even apologizing, but deliberately chose not to do so. That is more offensive to me than the original remarks. It would have been pointed out to him that intentionally or not his comments (which of course were plain wrong factually) hurt and upset a lot of people. It seems he would not even acknowledge that. He left SN with no choice and deserved to be let go.
Yes I find it quite sad that it’s no longer appropriate to group people based on the colour of their skin and make inaccurate generalizations about them. /s
IMO, the claim that all immigrants fall into a specific race is more racist than what Cherry said. Guess what Cherry said is only offensive because there is a preconceived notion of what skin color immigrants have?

Man, I’m pretty sick of this world sometimes. Genocide of the Uighars in China, where the ####ing NHL still hosts preseason games. But they need to come out and make a statement as well, against Don ####ing Cherry.
Perspective, this old guy on a hockey show does not have the power to denigrate thousands of people unless you’re willing to give it to him. Inflammatory remarks by a TV personality? Move on, you’ll be fine.
They did move on.

Nothing exists in a vacuum. Don Cherry never struck me as a free spirited person living his life outside of context, liberated from the shackles of preconcieved notions. Actually, he's always seemed like very much the opposite. True as your statement may be, it is a moot point.
People need to stop calling this a 'Free Speech' issue.
While this is technically true as Cherry was employed by SN and as such is not being directly punished by the Canadian government for his speech -- it was on a show produced in partnership with a government-funded entity (CBC). Imagine it was CBC doing the firing...
Just because it is legal doesn't make it right. And what do you think the impact will be for punishing a public figure for making an insensitive observation? Are all insensitive observations expressed aloud fireable offenses? Is that the standard we want to set? Because Cherry is only the latest in a long line of standard setting in this direction.

CBC had zero to with it, though. Roger's could have had the whole hockey package without CBC, but they realized CBC has far reach and people associate them with HNIC.
So they literally just show the games on CBC. There is no CBC production studio or staff or consultation. This contract and all programming decisions are 100% Rogers.

Don't think it's moot. The 88% white country has issues regarding race. It's the 88%, not the 12%, who are desperate to hide that fact and thus will punish any reminder of it. Thus these unaddressable racial issues will go on unresolved. Political correctness is cultural poison.
Don Cherry is a goof and I am more than willing to bet he’s the type of guy that rails on non-whites people constantly and throws around racist slurs like nobody’s business when in private. If it walks and talks like a duck...

The term political correctness has devolved into nothing more than a very simple minded way to attack people who do not agree with one's point of view. Political correctness is a common denominator for nothing.

Ughh, Facebook has become unbearable. A lot of people who've never watched hockey are all of a sudden Don Cherry supporters, and the sad part is, they are blaming CBC for all this.

Yes, the term has lost much of its original meaning. What would you call it?
