Evander Kane sued for 500k in gambling debts

he Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas filed a lawsuit Monday in Clark County District Court alleging San Jose Sharks forward Evander Kane failed to pay back $500,000 in gambling markers the casino extended to him in April. According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, the court documents state that Kane took out eight credits of varying amounts between $20,000 and $100,000 on or about April 15. The date would have fallen between Games 3 and 4 of the first round playoff series between the Sharks and the Vegas Golden Knights.

I don't infer that at all. You don't typically use markers to bet on sports. You usually get them at table games (I would imagine high limit blackjack). So the implication is he was up late gambling.

He could also be spreading the chips around with an entourage - that can build up the debt pretty quick. He could also just have co-signed for a buddy.

He lost 500,000 over 4 days. I don't care how much money he makes, that screams gambling problem to me.

This was always one of the scary issues around putting a franchise in Vegas. Some guys would get into trouble

Maybe it's just me but if I was a GM who fought and negotiated with a player's professional representation agency in an attempt to sign a player, had to reconfigure my team and affect other player's lives/families so that I could fit said player under the salary cap only to find he gambled it away like this, I'd be pissed.

I know it's his money to spend how he sees fit. But I would see that entire process as an immense waste of time and money if they are just going to waste it at a gambling table to line the pockets of a casino owner.

Color me shocked. POS player, always has and always will be. If he was a decent human being he'd pay that off right away. It's only 7% of your annual salary.

Not to be 'That guy' but Kane's Salary is $8 Mill a year...After State/Us tax plus agent fees, plus escrow, plus plus it's prob more like 20% of his annual salary I don't think if I went on a gambling binge I could come up with 20% of my salary right away! however you are right on 1 account, POS player that always has been and always will be a "look at me" guy rather than the team first!

I did think of the taxes and everything, but you would think after all of these years he would have some money in his account... I would hope after all of those years of playing hockey he would have AT LEAST 7m stored in the bank. But, if he has problems like this it's almost a guarantee that he is probably living with less in the bank.

Yeah, but you think there has been just one gambling binge and he is only down $500k? I am assuming he is pretty close to busto if this got as far as him being sued. Otherwise, his agent/lawyer would have made some arrangement with the casino for repayment and to keep this quiet...

You would hope he has 7 Mill in the bank but lets not kid ourselves there is almost a zero percent chance that is actually true! I have always said these guys need to have money management drilled in their heads from the day they get drafted, too many of these guys go out and buy a $100,00 car coupled with a $50,000 watch and just keep spending thinking it will never go away....

The NHL has to investigate this now for sure. The question will always come out about the seamy side of a gambling debt and what was he offered to square the debt.

It is the Cosmopolitan, not Tony Soprano. He was offered either (1) pay in full now or (2) make reasonable payments over a set period of time. Obviously, he couldn't do either.

The NHL and NHLPA have programs to help players manage their money to ensure they are keeping an eye on retirement but you are always going to have a percentage of people that live day to day and make bad financial decisions.
