I really don't like that the refs/league don't protect players when they should and teams still feel like they need to make goon-ish plays to protect themselves. We see so many soft "holding" calls, or "hooking" calls where there is almost no contact, and yet you get nothing when Rittich gets speared twice, or Getzlaf crushes Mangiapane after the whistle.
If you want to be serious about player safety then put a greater emphasis on penalizing plays that actually have a higher potential for injury and that will cut out a lot of these retaliatory plays.

He was penalized. Double minor in fact.

I hope he's not suspended. We play Tom Wilson tonight.

Call me old school, but I am perfectly fine with Lucic doing this. Buddy pitch forks Rittich, and doesn't expect a glove to the face? Yea, it's a 250lb (probably wrong on that, but you get the idea), brick sh t house coming at you, but he should know better than to stand there like a dummy like nothing is wrong.
He shouldn't be suspended for buddy acting like an entitled tool and not defend himself after that Bush league pitch fork.

If he gets suspended then we should be expecting suspensions after pretty much every NHL game from now on.

This. Not every play that gets a penalty deserves a suspension or fine. That was a pretty typical scrum punch. Lucic just was quick and strong, otherwise it’s not even noteworthy.

maybe this belongs in the unpopular opinions thread but I don't think handing out CTE for sticking the goalie is an acceptable response in 2019.
We'd be, rightfully, absolutely livid if this had happened in reverse to Tkachuk.
Lucic is a caveman and I find this kind of thing to be abhorrent.

That is what he is paid 5.25 million dollars a year to do though. He is by far the worst forward on the nhl roster (from a hockey playing, non facepunching perspective) and gets passed by AHL callups like Quine so we do not really know where he ranks within the entire organization. But as good Flames fans we should cheer these actions otherwise we would have to acknowledge that we are watching peak Lucic this year and every year after this year is going to be worse from a hockey playing perspective (I suspect he will retain his facepunching abilities).

If no call was made, absolutely. I wouldn't be expecting a suspension though.

Hasn’t this happened to Tkachuk, like a couple times?

Lucic will get a one game suspension in my estimation. It's not that he went after the player, but how he went after the player. I loved the stick up for your goalie thing but there's a good way and the other way to do it. I think Lucic went a bit too far the other way. Haymakers aren't the way to go.

This is not a head injury. If that’s the case then cancel hockey or all contact sports.

If you don't want CTE you should wear a helmet and also not go around spearing guys in a league where face punching is mostly allowed.

Getting punched in the face in a scrum happens to Tkachuk every 2-3 games. The reactions I've read on CP when Tkachuk gets popped for the extra curriculars after the whistle are mostly praise for Tkachuk being Tkachuk and rarely crying for a suspension. Tkachuk also is very good at drawing penalties for doing his thing.

I hope Lucic tell those stupid ####s at the NHL that if they called half the #### perpetrated against the Flames on a regular basis he wouldn't have to do what he does. How many broken fingers does Johnny need before the Refs call a ####ing penalty on all the slashes he takes? or should I say used to take, those don't seem to happen nearly as much since we acquired Lucic. apparently one isn't enough.
It's bad enough the Refs call phantom calls against guys like Bennett, but then they ignore flagrant infractions against the Flames?
sorry, I'm ranting. #### the NHL, #### the refs, good for Lucic.
go flames go.

Weirdly enough, this will be the third consecutive DoPS case to involve the Flames. The two most recent Player Safety decisions resulted in Adam Lowry being suspended two games for hitting Kylington and Darren Helm being fined $5,000 for slashing Lindholm.

And Lowry just did the exact same thing to Vegas.

I'm all for Lucic sticking up for teammates but he shouldn't be straight up punching players in the head with his gloves on. That punch last night was over the line.
