I don't think there's much chance it'll be a commercial flop. But it could certainly be a flop in terms of how fans view the franchise. Abrams is going to have to do something incredible to end this thing on a generally satisfying note.
This truly seems like a trilogy that has been cobbled together as it goes along and they never set out with a clear vision or direction. Frankly, they've already lost me with the story, I really don't know why I'm supposed to care about any of these characters, and it seems pretty clear they brought back Palpatine for the nostalgia factor alone. I'll watch it on streaming at some point but I've got no real excitement to head to the theaters when it comes out.

The theaters don't seem exactly packed for later screenings (at least looking at Silver City's seating maps for the Friday showing). Not sure if that is a good sign or not of SW fatigue.

I agree, however, TLJ was so poorly received that fans weren't willing to give Solo a chance.

Had a Marvel movie or two been as criticized as TLJ then I think they may have slowed down the release schedules a bit.

I'm going to watch it because I'm cheering hard for JJ to make this right. I just don't see how he can do it, but then again, he's the artist not me.

TLJ story is so wacky it would be like if The Two Towers totally dismissed the Ring storyline, then the director of The Return of the King comes in to try tying the story together and ending it.

As God famously said:

Could part of that be with the Marvel movies after a certain point there was always that reminder that things were moving towards the Thanos showdown? Whereas here we don't have an Infinity War/Endgame that is kind of common knowledge to look forward to?

It is conceivable. Despite the saturation of the Marvel movies they always had different characters, different conflicts and while inhabiting the same universe there was variety and a more than a bit of well placed levity.

The current Star Wars movies have just felt so.....heavy, if thats the right term.

Balancing the nostalgia for the old movies, characters, fan service, it just feels like the weight of expectations is ludicrous.

I guess I kind of feel like these last three tentpole films are just trying to end the last cycle of Star Wars as opposed to starting a new one.

Maybe 'fatigue' isnt the right word but unlike the Marvel movies it doesnt feel as though new fans are signing on to start a new ride as much as it feels like old fans are demanding closure.

What to me worked on Rogue one was that it was a whole new set of characters and the OT were really there to play a supporting role.

With Solo it was a reliance on Solo and Chewie,

I mean frankly Tarkin was awesome, but he was really just there to be a jerk. Vader was in the shadows but when he stepped out of the shadows it was to push through the hero's jeopardy.

That's what I figured, Hera would be pretty old by then, maybe it was Jacen flying it.

I still would like to see a series about the search for Ezra in the unknown regions.

I agree with you about Rogue One but it made less box office money than Episode VII and VIII which shows that a lot of fans still want to see the old characters. I was so jaded after TLJ that my expectations going into Solo were very low but it at least exceeded those expectations as it was a good not great film. It's kind of unfortunate that it didn't do well at the box office as the advantages of the spin off is a different and fresher storyline.

Twi'lek's have about the same life span as a human, so if Han Solo, Leia, Luke etc.. could show up in these movies no reason to think Hera couldn't still be alive. I kind of thought that looked like the Ghost when I paused the trailer to admire the massive fleet, but thought nah couldn't be.. just a similar ship. Then it was confirmed by a few people involved and now Boyega, pretty cool nod to the fans.

Honestly Hera was one of my favorite characters on that show, and I did admit to peeling onions when Kanaan died and she got off of the shuttle and Chopper went over to console her.

Chopper by the way, awesome character description fro Filoni. While other droids were like the family dog always eager to please, Chopper was the family cat.

I would love to see a least a Glimpse of Hera boarding the Ghost before the battle. But at the end of Rebel's it feels like the whole crew scattered, and Rex was probably dead by then.

No doubt the film will be a box office success. But Disney has so much more riding on the Star Wars brand, including huge investments at its theme parks and hotel properties. It’s imperative that it keeps new fans coming through the pipeline. The films are how you do this. I will no doubt see the movie but I will be dragging my kids with me, not the other way around.

Everytime i think about Rogue One ... such a clever way to release a new film that nests into the main storyline. Easily the best Star Wars film since Empire Strikes Back

I loved that the whole idea came from one line in the opening crawl of the New Hope.

Quote:
Rebel spaceships, striking from a hidden base, have won their first victory against the evil Galactic Empire

Its kind of funny because pre PT movies and the Rebels series, the Rebellion was pretty well getting its a$$ kicked across the Galaxy.

Then in a short span the Empire lost at Lothal, and you can argue that the victory in Rogue One was a pretty bitter victory. They lost their best Admiral at the time and a huge chunk of their fleet to get the plans.

If you didn't know about what happened in ANH, you'd be sure that the ending of Rogue One might not have been a great one for the Rebels.

If you look at the Empire, realistically from the end of ROTS to maybe the last 15 minutes of ANH it was pretty much the Empire kicking the crap out of the Rebels. I mean yeah you had the destruction of the Death Star, which in the Legends EU most of the Senior Imperial Commanders were happy to see happen, but the Empire still had a massive fleet and shrugged their shoulders because they would build a bigger better bader Death Star.

eh, Palps had the galaxy under his fist for barely one generation. the Star Wars films are like war propaganda showing one tiny window of victory among thousands of years of bad guy failure. he literally had to wait for the Jedi to get bored of winning before his plan would even have a chance of working.

Yeah it's a deep fake, but there's still a premise to the joke.
