Unpopular Opinions about Flames
The Flames are stuck in perpetual mediocrity and lazy/inconsistent efforts because nobody really wants to be in this city. Counting down the days and collecting pay checks until they can go somewhere better.

Are basically lottery. Hamonic is a legit top 4 dman. WAY more
valuable than random (not top ten) picks in the draft.

Hamonic is not an elite player, not even close really. Your best chance for finding such players is in the draft. Of course there no guarantees but you need to beat the odds to be a championship team.

Optimistic: The top line (and in particular Monahan) struggling is a good thing, if it's because they're changing how they play. Falling back on the old "give it to Gaudreau and go to the net" would probably score more goals and win more games in the early season, but forcing Monahan to be more involved should pay dividends when he's a more complete player by the end of the season.

You think you are getting an elite player in the bottom half of round one in the 2018 Draft? Who?

I disagree.
1. Some NHL players with limited ties to the city still choose to move here (see Brouwer pre-contract.)
2. Calgary is consistently ranked one of the nicest places to live... on earth. Cleanliness, affordability, "most liveable"... you name it. The city is a nice place.
Not sure why Calgarians feel the need to lump ourselves in with dumps like Edmonton and Winnipeg when literally no third parties think they we deserve to be in remotely the same category. Cities often ranked close to calgary in listings:
- Vienna
- Osaka
- Vancouver
- Copenhagen
- Melbourne
Your opinion is unpopular because it's not backed up by anything, not because it's hard to accept.

Why do so many alumni live in Calgary, even those from other provinces and the US?

Hamonic was drafted 53rd overall. You want to argue that it is impossible to draft a better player than him with any of those picks?
My point was I'd rather have the picks and take a shot in the draft. Hell if you think its impossible to find an impact player with those picks then bundle them to move into the top 10, or move into the next draft year. The Flames gave up picks 12, 43, 47 and 57 over three drafts in those two deals. Or if you disagree with building through the draft, those picks should have yielded so much more in players through a trade.

That 12th overall pick alone became Noah Dobson, who is probably one of the best defence prospects anywhere. He’d sure be nice to have.

because it seems many NHL players put Calgary in the same category.
how many of those places you have NHL teams? Vancouver. you have to look at Calgary as an NHL destination not if it's a nice place or not.
and no matter if you admit it or not, Calgary is far closer to Edmonton or Winnipeg when it comes to culture than the other cities you've just listed.
when NHL players look at places they want to play, Calgary is closer to the bottom than anything else. why would they care if Calgary is ranked amongst Vienna or Melbourne as a nice place to live?

On the face of it, this appears true because we hear of many who do. But, there are thousands that choose to live elsewhere.
I expect a lot of those that choose to live here do so because of family (especially their wife's family), or they stay because they don't want to move kids who are already settled in school.

Those lists you’re referring to are both informed by and targeted at Joe and Jane Lunch Bucket, not professional athletes making millions of dollars a year who typically have wives and families used to living among the social elite. I’m sure places like Columbus and Ottawa have their own nice little lists of reasons why they’re so amazing, but it means nothing in this context.
There’s a reason Calgary is consistently listed among those teams, and yes, also among Edmonton and Winnipeg, on almost every player’s no-trade list. When you have the option of playing and living in virtually any major US city, or hell, even Vancouver, Montreal, or Toronto, a podunk cowboy town like Calgary stuck in the middle of nowhere does not measure up. There is nothing here for you if you’re not in the energy business.
I stand by my point.

I don’t think he’s going to be better than a number 4. Which is Hamonic. But the suggestion was that there’s an elite player that could have been obtained. So again, who? We have the entire draft list and I don’t see an elite player from 12 onwards.

Ah yes, where narratives about a failing economy and an oil only city that has nothing for rich people to do outweighs actual 3rd party objective rankings.
I think most NHLers have all Canadian cities on their ntcs, it's the media spotlight and nothing else. When it comes down to it have we ever heard of a player that didn't end up waving to come here because of the city?
Kadri is the only one that comes to mind, but as we heard he was just trying to stay in TO not spiting the city. There are numerous examples of players who did waive their NTC to come to Calgary.

There is also a big difference between (a) an optimal place to live with your family when you retire and (b) place you want to live as a young millionaire to enjoy the "culture".
Calgary is very good for (a). For (b) we are far behind NY, LV, CH, MI, MO, etc.

I don't think a player's will to win is dictated by what city they live in when they do it.
Other than being an American city, I don't think St. Louis is an incredible city or even a city that's better than Calgary, they just won the cup. Washington ain't a great city, how about Detroit!?

1 - National anthems should only be sung before international games.
2 - The Americanized word "Winningest" should be banned from use.
3 - Lindholm should be 1C with one dimensional Monahan and Gaudreau traded.
